Big innings give ODAC teams wins on Thursday

Noah Stennett's ninth inning grand slam helped save the day from a blown seven-run lead as Arcadia University defeated No. 19 Penn State Harrisburg 13-8 in non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon.

Roanoke College took home their second win over a ranked opponent this season after taking down Christopher Newport 12-11 on Thursday. CNU jumped out to an early lead after tagging the Maroons for five runs in the first three innings. Roanoke proved last weekend with Denison that they have to fire power to get back into the game. Roanoke started to get the bats warmed up as they made it through the lineup the second time, tallying two runs in the fourth. The Maroons exploded offensively in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of bases loaded situations. Nate Prince capped off the seven run inning with a grand slam to put the Maroons on top 9-5. The Captains knotted it up at nine in the bottom of the fifth but RC pushed back with three runs over the next two innings. CNU tried to match Roanoke, scoring a run in the seventh and the ninth but Isaac Brooks was able to shut them down in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. Brooks is now just one save away from tying the program record in career saves.

Shawn Baxter went 4-7 on the day with two doubles, two runs and six RBI to help lead Ferrum College to a non-conference sweep over visiting Wilson College. The Panthers took the opener 10-0, then earned a 16-2 win in the nightcap at Panther Field. Ferrum scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a two-RBI single up the middle by Baxter, an RBI single by Gregory Melo, and a sacrifice fly by Jorge Olivo. Baxter closed the game 3-4 at the plate with a double, a run, four RBI and a stolen base. The script was the same in game two. The Panthers exploded for eight runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Castillo started it off with an RBI double, followed by Mason Moffett's RBI single and Kristian Barcroft's two-RBI double. Jorge Olivo had an RBI single, then JJ Mulhern's single drove in two more runs. The Panthers tacker on three runs in the third inning, including two on Kyle Markowitz's triple to left center. Wilson's Tyler Smith broke up the shutout when drove a ball over the right field fence for a solo homer in the fourth inning. The Phoenix added a run in the sixth to trim the lead to 12-2, but Ferrum added four runs in the bottom of the frame for the final score.

Concordia-Chicago took the field in Florida for game seven,
where they would put the 4-2 win over Saint Mary's
University. The Cougars battled back-and-forth with the
Cardinals, but strong pitching and heavy bats would jolt
them ahead for the victory.

Sophomore left fielder Jake Moore had three hits and four RBIs, and senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson had two hits and three RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 16-0 non-conference road win at Mary Baldwin University on Thursday in Grottoes. Freshman left-hander Bobby Holihan started on the mound and pitched the first 6.0 innings for his first collegiate pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (4-7) in the seven-inning, run-rule contest against the host Fighting Squirrels (0-9). Holihan (1-1) pitched the first 6.0 shutout innings for his first career win, scattering five hits with a career-high five strikeouts and no walks. Senior right-hander Justin Reynolds tossed the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.

Keystone opened the RussMatt Baseball Invitational with a 6-2 win over St. John Fisher followed by a 9-0 defeat to Wisconsin-Oshkosh to kick off their annual spring break trip. Sean Brennan improved to 2-0 on the mound as he tossed a gem with six scoreless innings pitched and 13 strikeouts. He gave up three hits in his outing. Anthony Mierez came in the ninth and punched out two batters. Nate Ewing posted two hits to lead the Giants offense. In game two, the UW-Oshkosh Titans scored four through the first four innings which was highlighted by a three-run first innings. They would score one run in the fourth followed by two runs in the seventh and eighth innings in route to the shutout victory. The Titans scored their nine runs on ten hits including three extra base hits. Keystone scored one run on four hits with two errors.

Buena Vista scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the Beavers bounced back from its first loss of the spring trip in a big way with a lopsided 18-1 victory over North Park University on Thursday evening. Junior Seth Busch had a career day by going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and four runs scored while also swiping one base. Sophomore Brandon Jenkins homered and was one of six players to finish with two hits while driving in a team-leading four runs. Senior Drew Taylor went 2-for-3 with and RBI and three runs scored. Senior Joel Garcia was 2-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch. Overall, the Beavers chalked up a season-high 19 hits and have been in double digits in seven straight games. The 18 runs scored is also the team's highest single-game total since it plated 18 during an 18-10 win over Bethel University early last season.

Hilbert College opened its 2025 campaign this evening under the lights on Griffith Field against Rivier University down in Myrtle Beach. The Hawks used an 11-6 victory to begin a second straight season 1-0 as the lineup provided runs bunches while the pitching staff allowed just two earned runs. New additions Reed Lesmeister and Kyle Borrello each chipped in with a pair of RBIs in their Hilbert debuts and Dylan Moorhouse started his season strong with eight strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work. A five-hit, five-run, bottom of the sixth inning gave the Hawks their first lead of their game as they held a three-run advantage after six innings of play. This was all they needed as both tems scored runs in the late innings but the Hawks never lost the advantage.

Misericordia University extended its win streak to three games after defeating Heidelberg, 15-13, Thursday afternoon in Ft. Pierce, FL. Drew Van Horn and Gabe Bunn led the way with three RBI on two hits, including a triple. Owen Daminger had three hits and two RBI while Owen Cordner knocked in two runs with a double. Luke Leventhall earned his second win of the season, tossing seven strikeouts through 4.2 innings on the mound. Aidan Paduck picked up his first save of the season. The Student Princes made things interesting in the top of the ninth frame, scoring five runs to pull themselves within two of tying the game. On a two-out single to right field, a Heidelberg baserunner attempted to take an extra base and was gunned down at third by Ethan Elmes to end the game.

Rose-Hulman earned an impressive road win over the Greenville Panthers on Thursday with a final score of 7-1. This improves the team to 2-3 overall this season. Mark Serdinak had an exceptional night at the plate finishing the game going 4-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Jackson Summers was another standout going 2-3 at the dish with one run scored. After a run by the Panthers in the bottom of the first, Rose-Hulman answered with a home run by Serdinak to tie the game in the top of the second. The Fightin' Engineers exploded offensively in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to take a commanding lead 4-1. The team was able to add on two more runs in the sixth, and another run in the seventh to secure the win. Andrew Noblitt started the game on the mound for the Fightin' Engineers going 2.0 innings with three strikeouts. Alec Lewandowski was credited the win pitching 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.

Illinois College continued its strong start in Florida with a 6-3 win over Dubuque on Thursday morning, powered by early offense and dominant pitching. The Blueboys jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Adam Passmore after Logan Fleener's RBI single got the scoring started. Illinois College added a crucial insurance run in the fourth when Louie Bartletti doubled home Logan Schweigert, and another in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Connor Hennemann. Charlie Lardi set the tone on the mound, striking out 10 over 5.2 innings while allowing just two runs.Andrew Wieneke and Branson Shaw teamed up for 3.1 innings of relief, with Shaw sealing the win in the ninth despite a late Dubuque run. Passmore led the offense, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Fleener added two hits and an RBI. Illinois College's pitching staff racked up 17 strikeouts, holding Dubuque's lineup in check.

On a windy sunny day, Gordon College hit the dirt to play the Berea College Mountaineers at the RussMatt Tournament. In a high-scoring game, the Fighting Scots came out on top, 13-10. Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded, the Fighting Scots quickly took the 2-0 lead. Berea answered back to draw within a run and tie the game in the third to lock up the score at 5-5. The Mountaineers put the ball in play often in the fourth, causing a handful of Gordon miscues to take the lead, 8-5. Gordon put up a four-spot on the board in the top of the sixth to regain the edge (9-8) and two in the ninth to widen the gap to 11-8. A two-out rally from the blue and white scored a pair in the ninth to secure the eventual 13-10 win.

A dominant offensive showing powered TCNJ to a 19-4 win over Ursinus College on Thursday afternoon at George Ackerman Park. The Lions (2-2) erupted for 15 hits and took advantage of nine walks from the Bears (4-3) to secure their second victory of the season. TCNJ struck first in the opening inning and kept rolling in the third, adding four more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Mike LaGravenis to break the game open at 7-0. Ursinus cut into the lead with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, but TCNJ responded in a big way in the seventh, plating eight runs behind a three-run homer from Andrew Fernandez and two-run doubles from LaGravenis and Jack O'Donnell. The Lions weren't done, tacking on four more in the eighth, including a two-run blast from Zach Bowman. Dan Merkel (1-0) picked up the win, allowing just one earned run over five innings with six strikeouts. Jack O'Shea, Gianni Marano, Joe Marchese, and John DiCostanzo closed out the final four frames to secure the win.

Dominican University was back in action Thursday morning after two days of rest in Florida and took on Northland. The Stars came back from a 6-0 deficit to win 7-6 in ten innings. The Jacks of Northland College put up 6 runs in the top of the second inning on 4 hits and two Dominican errors. with seven innings to change their fortunes, Dominican scored single runs in the second and third innings. A three run seventh got them within one and a ninth inning pinch-hit home run by junior Tyler Johnson sent the game into extras. Matthew Earley came to the plate with runners on first and third with two outs and delivered a base hit to the shortstop to win it in extras for DU.

Elizabethtown came out on top against Alvernia Thursday afternoon winning 3-2 in 11 innings. Nate Moser went 3 for 3 with two runs, and a stolen base. Moser's runs consisted of the game tying run and the winning run. RJ Agriss went 1 for 1 with the winning RBI single. Joey Smith pitched 5.1 innings totaling five strikeouts. Ethan Espeset earned his first career win as he pitched the final two innings. Alvernia got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Elizabethtown came within one of the Golden Wolves in the seventh as Alex Perrin hit an RBI single to the shortstop. In the ninth, Moser reached first base via a walk. Following a sacrifice bunt and a foul out, Moser had advanced to third. The Golden Wolves threw a pitch just too high, and Moser was able to score the game tying run off a wild pitch. To start off the 11th, Moser hit a single through the left side and then stole second. Agriss knocked an RBI single to left field and advanced to second on an error which allowed Moser to score.

Gustavus registered a season-high 17 hits Thursday in a 14-9 win over Bethany Lutheran. The Gusties remain undefeated early in the season at 6-0. After Bethany took an early 1-0 lead in the first, Gustavus answered immediately with four runs in the bottom half then took a comfortable 7-1 lead in the third with three more runs. The Vikings got back into the game in the fourth with three runs, ending Gustie starter Adam Biewen's day on the mound, who allowed three earned runs on six hits and four strikeouts in his season debut. Bethany then made it a two-run difference in the fifth, but Logan Feeney entered the game and ended the rally with a strikeout looking. The Gusties added two runs to their lead in the bottom half two more in the seventh. Danny Gavin (4-6, 4 R, 2 RBI, SB) and Brady Schmitz (4-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2B, 2 BB, SB) led the hit parade with four hits apiece.

After a long day of travel, New England College arrived in Myrtle Beach early this afternoon, and defeated Neumann University, 8-7, in the early evening, securing a win to kick off the team's spring break slate in the Palmetto State. The Pilgrims came out hot in the first inning of their first game of Spring Break scoring runs in the first four innings to take a 6-0 lead. Neumann began to creep back into the game with two runs in the top of the sixth inning and made things extremely interesting in the seventh when Thomas Carroll hit a three-run inside-the-park home run on a line drive that narrowly missed the glove of the diving NEC outfielder. In the eighth, the Knights would knot the game up at 6, erasing the Pilgrim' lead late in the game. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, searching for the go-ahead run, senior infielder Brady Philibotte started a rally with a single to center field. Jaken Pellerin, hitting out of the four hole, would come through, slugging another double – this time off the wall in deep left field – to score Philibotte and put the 'Grims on top. Yeri Ramos would then follow up with his third hit of the day to score Pellerin and provide a two-run cushion entering the ninth. Senior pitcher Liam Bruskewicz pitched the top of the ninth inning for NEC, quickly recording two outs before running into a little trouble. With two on, a hit from Josh Finger would score a run to bring the Knights within two, but Finger would get thrown out at second on a nice relay from the NEC defense to end the game. Ramos had a 3-for-5 day with five RBIs, finishing a home run shy of the cycle.
