Playing in their fifth game in as many days, Washington University picked up their ninth win of the season with a 13-3 run-rule contest against Westminster on Wednesday afternoon at Kelly Field. It looked like it would be trouble for the Bears early on but they ened the game by the 10 run rule. Kevin Stephens led the team in hits on the day, going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.Extra-base hits were the norm of the day as six players were all able to use their power and speed to hit and reach second safely on the same play. Senior Sebastian Guzman earned his third win of the season, pitching the final five innings in relief. He finished with four strikeouts, one walk, and no runs against.
DeSales University finished up its spring trip to Texas with two wins taking down #7 Trinity University, 4-3, before a 17-5 win over Schreiner University earlier in the day on Wednesday. The Bulldogs dominated this one recording 23 hits and scoring in all but one inning to snap a hard luck four-game losing streak. Seven different players had multiple hits in the win. The Bulldogs to an early 3-0 lead in this one scoring twice in the second inning and once in the third. Trinity got within a run in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run but that score remained into the eighth inning. The Bulldogs got a much needed insurance run in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout from Anderosky. That run proved important when Trinity put runners on second and third with just one out in the bottom of the ninth but senior Ashton Johnson wiggled out of the jam retiring the next two batters to earn the save and strand the tying run at third base.
UW-River Falls made a triumphant return on Wednesday, March 12, winning 14-3 against Nebraska Wesleyan University in the first of six games during its spring break trip at the RussMatt Invitational. The game marked the first varsity contest in Falcon Baseball history since May 5, 2002 as UWRF returned to the diamond after nearly a 23-year absence. The program was reinstated in summer of 2023, and the win also marked the first for head coach Steve Bartlein. The Falcons found themselves down 2-1 after two innings, before a high-octane fifth and sixth inning saw UWRF tally 12 runs unanswered, shifting the control of the game. The Prairie Wolves managed a run in the fifth inning to trim UWRF's lead to 13-3, but another RBI-single by Paulsen in the seventh brought the score to 14-3, which would stand through the final out.
Collin Palmieri's base hit down the right field line past a drawn in infield propelled Stevenson to a 10-9 win over Lebanon Valley on Wednesday. Palmieri finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, as his hit scored pinch runner Graham Sears to level the Mustangs home record to 2-2. Brandon Perillo had two hits and drove in three runs as the Mustangs hit the double digit mark in hits for the seventh time this season. A plethora of pitchers took the hill for Stevenson (3-7) with Mason Gove getting the win after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Nine other pitchers saw action, collecting nine strikeouts. Trailing 8-4 after the top of the fifth, Vincent Licor singled home Palmieri followed by a two-run double by Brandon Perillo to get the Mustangs within one at 8-7. Pinch hitter Zack Majeski doubled down the line to score Perillo to knot the score at 8. Zack Majeski would ground out to pitcher on a bunt in the eighth to again tie the score at 9-all.
Salve Regina coming off their firt losses of the season, batted in three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the Seahawks 7-3 victory over the Marymount Saints. With two outs in the top of the first Christian Homa tripled down the right field line and Evan O'Rourke's single at the next at bat brought Homa home for the first run of the day. The Saints would come back with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and a pair of stolen bases to make it a close 4-3 game but Matthew Neal's single in the top of the seventh inning brought two runs in. Shane Williams' triple in the top of the ninth sealed the deal for Salve Regina. All of the Seahawks scoring took place with two outs recorded in the inning. Freshman right-handed pitcher James Tobin recorded his first save in the Seahawk Uniform after entering the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when the score was 4-2. Tobin successfully kept the Saints' bats quiet, only allowing one run to cross the plate.
Misericordia University scored in each of the first innings to build a big lead on the way to an 18-7 win at York, Wednesday. Jack Regenye, Brock Bollinger and Shay Gustafson all had three hits for MU while Brian Korchok, Gabe Bunn and Brooks Kanwisher all had two hits. Max Kneidinger scattered eight hits over five innings to earn the win. Regenye, Bollinger and McDonough opened the game with three straight singles and the Cougars built a 4-0 lead after one inning. The Cougars led 7-2 after four innings and broke the game open over the next two innings. Bunn and Bollinger had RBI-doubles in the fourth and Gustafson had a two-run double to key a four-run fifth.
After dropping three games in a row, Coast Guard got back on track in explosive fashion with a 12-4 win at #18 Christopher-Newport. On the mound for Coast Guard was freshman standout John DiMarsico. The zone pounding lefty has been nails thus far for the Bears, recording a decision in three of the team's four wins. He earned the victory vs Mitchell and CNU with a save vs Catholic. Today, in John's first career collegiate start, he threw five strong innings, allowing three runs, and recording his first college strikeout in the victory. CGA would give DiMarsico early run support, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning. The Captains would rally back to score three runs in the bottom of the third but Coast Guard got one back in the fourth to make the score 6-3. In the 5th, the Bears again benefitted from their opponents miscues to make the score 8-3 in favor of CGA. That score would hold until the bottom of the 8th when CNU scored on an infield single to cut the Bear lead to four. But in the top of the 9th Coast Guard got the insurance they needed, piling on four more runs for the 12-4 score that would ultimately hold.
Top ranked UW-Whitewater put together a late rally, flipping the upset attempt by Carroll University. The Warhawks (5-0) scored 8 runs in the seventh & eight innings to win 10-6 over the Pioneers (7-4). Both teams were quiet offensively until Carroll broke the tie in the fifth with an RBI single. After a three-up-three-down in the bottom of the frame, the Pioneers carried the momentum into a four-run 6th inning to go up 6-2. Carroll's defense stepped up to keep the Warhawks heavy hitting at bay, but the Warhawks broke one open with loaded bases in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game. Carroll looked like they were posed to get some insurance runs in the 8th. Ben Lee was faced with bases loaded, but recorded a K and ground out to escape the inning without any runs. The Warhawks carried the momentum straight into the bottom of the frame to take the lead at 7-6. The Warhawks added 3 more runs on RBI singles, turning the game around to a 10-6 advantage. Max Huseboe closed the four-run lead with 2 ground outs & a fly-out.
Senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris had a two-run double in the first game, and sophomore designated hitter Jake Moore added two hits and one RBI, while freshman second baseman Gavin Smith had one hit and three RBIs in the second game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a sweep of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at home past St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sophomore right-hander Hank Blanton gained the pitching win in relief in the 4-2 opener, the first of his collegiate career, while junior right-hander Jacob Williams gained the mound win in relief in the 10-2 nightcap for the host Tigers (7-9) against the visiting Seahawks (0-8).
Two runs in the second, four in the fifth, and three in the eighth helped Arcadia University end its spring break trip with an 11-3 win over No. 21 Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday morning. Baldwin Wallace opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. The Knights took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second as Thomas Strauch tripled home Cam Seymour and then scored on a wild pitch. Griffin Murphy increased the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a single scoring Seymour. After the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Joshua Agriesti and Seymour drove in runs and a two-run double from Murphy pushed the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the frame. Noah Stennett, Murphy, and Ryan Radigan all drove in runs in the eighth to finish the scoring. Vinny Versaci earned the win in relief, allowing one run on five hits across 2.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Gettysburg used a five-run fifth inning to break a scoreless deadlock and defeat Centenary, 5-1. Jack Pistner led the Bullets with two hits, including a three-run home run in the decisive inning. Ryan Wootten threw five scoreless innings with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed to pick up the victory. Joseph Frei led the Cyclones with two hits. In a scoreless game, Brendan Laqui drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Will Roche dropped down a bunt that rolled down the first base line and he beat it out for a single. After a sacrifice bunt put the two runners in scoring position, Jack Burke poked a ball to deep center for a triple and 2-0 lead. After a Will Stellato walk, Jack Pistner went deep for the second time this season, clearing the fence in right for a 5-0 lead. Three walks in the seventh and a one-out RBI groundout from Nick Payne made it a 5-1 game.
WPI mounted a late rally and walked off with a dramatic 7-6 victory over FDU-Florham on Wednesday morning. Jacob Wiberg scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the Engineers' comeback win. Andrew Cash led the way for WPI, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the first inning. Tommy Burns added two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth, while Zachary Roethlein drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. James DiGiovanni also chipped in an RBI groundout. Wiberg reached base twice and scored twice, including the game-winning run. For FDU-Florham, John Rolli and Nick Colbert drove in runs, while Peter Longo delivered a key two-run double in the sixth.
The University of Lynchburg bounced back with a midweek victory over Methodist, 15-4, on Wednesday evening at Armstrong-Shelley Field. The No. 4 Hornets (13-2) finished their second game in as many days with a commanding 11-run triumph. Lynchburg capitalized right out of the gates and the third inning saw another sting from the Hornets as Benton Jones launched a two-run homer down the right-field line. The offense continued to roll in the third with additional RBI contributions from Gavin Collins and Parker Cato, pushing Lynchburg to a 5-0 lead by the end of the frame. Methodist mounted a brief comeback in the fourth, scoring three runs, highlighted by Rogers' two-RBI double. However, Lynchburg responded immediately with a six-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth. Jones added another RBI walk in the sixth, pushing the score to 15-4, which would hold as the final. Pokorak and Jones both finished the game with two RBIs apiece, while Collins had a solid performance, driving in four runs. Munitz and Warren also contributed to the offensive effort, with multiple runs scored. Mason McDowell claimed the win on the mound for Lynchburg. Conner Moore stepped in for the ninth and effectively closed out the game, throwing three straight strikeouts to seal the victory.
An eighth inning rally saw Union College defeat VTSU Castleton 5-3 in the home opener for the Garnet Chargers on Wednesday afternoon at Central Park A Diamond. Knotted at three going into the bottom of the eighth, Union scored twice in the frame to take a 5-3 lead before senior Alex Erickson closed out the ninth to secure the win for the Garnet Chargers. Five Union batters recorded a multi-hit game in the win. Senior Dan Sheeran led the way with a 2-for-4 day, two RBIs, and a run scored. Classmate Sam Strazza registered his first homerun of the season and junior Nico Lambros added two RBIs. Union rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead again. A leadoff single by senior Kyle Zaslaw saw sophomore Danny Talacci enter the game as a pinch runner. First-year Dylan Swarts added a single of his own and DiCaprio was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Sheeran lined a single to center field for the go-ahead run. After changing pitchers, Lambros hit a sac fly to center and Swarts crossed home to make it 5-3. Senior Aidan McGee earned the win for Union and Erickson picked up his second save of the season. First-year Ryan Calvario started the midweek matchup and pitched three scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
Keystone College rolled to another victory in the Sunshine State as they defeated SUNY Oneonta 15-4 Wednesday afternoon. Nate Ewing went 5-fo-5 with two RBI. Carlos Pascual led the team with five runs batted in as he had a two RBI double, two RBI sac flies, and an RBI hit by pitch. Jacob Yager went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Leam Powell got the start and pitched 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Drew Sorrentino tossed the game in relief and struck out nine batters. Sorrentino earned the victory, his first of the season. Both the Giants and Red Dragons scored two runs in the first inning. Keystone would add two more in the top half of the sixth while Oneonta tied the game again with two in the bottom half of the seventh. The Giants scoring came alive in the last two innings as they scored 11 unanswered runs with eight of them being scored in the ninth.
Case Western Reserve University sophomore Tyler Stillson allowed one earned run over six innings and drove in the first run of the game to lead the Spartans to a 9-3 win over Swarthmore College at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina on Wednesday. The win was the fourth straight for the Spartans who improved to 7-4 overall on the season, while Swarthmore fell to 6-7 with the loss. Stillson, who made his first appearance on the mound of the season, recorded the longest start both of his career and by a Spartan this season, pitching into the seventh inning and allowing three total runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. He picked up the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. He added a one-for-five showing at the plate with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
Junior Owen Malone drove in three runs, including a two-RBI single in the seventh inning, as MIT rallied from an early deficit to defeat Tufts University, 10-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Sol Gittleman Park. Malone finished 2-for-5, including an RBI double that came as part of a six-run fifth inning for the Engineers. Sophomore Louis Hernandez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs including a solo home run in the top of the third inning. Hernandez's home run in the third inning was the first of his collegiate career. Malachi Soqui was 2-for-6 with a two RBIs and a run scored for MIT. Brian Rapanan gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits while walking three. ChaaseRubin earned the win in relief, scattering six hits over four innings. Reed Tubbs entered in the ninth and worked around a one-out double to pick-up the save. Tufts used eight different pitchers in the contest, sophomore Gabe Fitzgerald was charged with the loss.
Devin Tonkins rifled a line drive single into center, and Carter Blum sauntered home for yet another walk-off win, the fourth of the season already for Guilford College (11-1, 2-0 ODAC) as they came back from down seven in the final three frames to claim a 9-8 victory over Westminster (Pa.) (4-6, 0-0 PAC) on Wednesday afternoon at McBane Field. The Quakers benefited from their top showing from a starter this season as Tanner Royals one-upped Jacob Phillips' Tuesday showing with 5.0 innings of work allowing just two runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out a career-high six Titans, although he did not factor into the decision. Instead, Chase Wade, who tossed the final 1.1 innings allowing just a single baserunner on an HBP, against a K, got the pitching victory with the sudden-death win to improve to 3-0.
Marietta College downed North Central College for the second time in two days Wednesday afternoon by the score of 8-4. The Pioneers improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 2-8 overall. The top four hitters in the Pioneer batting order collected nine hits, drove in five runs and scored five times. Marietta's offense finished the day with 14 base hits as five different Pioneers had multiple hit games. Senior Zach Marzetz (1-0) started on the mound and got the win. He worked 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Matthew Farmer finished the sixth inning with a strikeout and Austin Ziance struck out the side in the seventh. Cooper Fiehrer pitched the final 2.0 innings for his second save of the season. Fiehrer did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three. In the batter's box, Fiehrer went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Senior Alex Gerdenich fired 3 2/3 innings of strong relief and The College of Wooster's offensive production provided plenty of support throughout Wednesday's 13-7 win at Allegheny College. Wooster (3-7) broke things open with a five-run fourth inning that made it 8-1. Gerdenich, playing right field at the time, started the inning with a walk and was one three Fighting Scots to score when senior center fielder Leo Widtmann cleared the bases with a triple to right center. Sophomore third baseman Zack Barienbrock legged out Wooster's second triple of the inning, which scored Widtmann, and junior first baseman Ryan Kramer capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Earlier, Barienbrock's two-run homer made it 3-1 in the third inning, and later, senior left fielder Nick Pett blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning that upped Wooster's lead to 11-6.
Senior Chaz Harvey had three hits, including a double, with one run and one RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision at Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Sophomore Jon Quici drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Harvey to give the visitors the early 1-0 edge. The Eagles put up two in the bottom of the frame before RMC responded in the top of the second. Freshman CJ Chatterton reached on a one-out error, was sacrificed to second by junior Jordan Hill and came home on a base hit by Quici to even the score at 2-2. UMW plated four in the third and two in the fourth before the Yellow Jackets put up a crooked number in the sixth. Harvey had a leadoff double, went to third on an infield single by Chatterton and scored on a two-out base hit by Hill. Quici singled to drive home Chatterton to make it 8-4. The Eagles added a run in the seventh to make the final 9-4.
A dominant offensive performance propelled TCNJ to a 14-8 come-from-behind victory over John Jay on Tuesday afternoon at George Ackerman Park. The Lions (3-4) used two big innings to pull away, scoring five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win after falling behind, 6-4, after the top of the sixth. The Lions broke it open in the bottom half, however, with Mike LaGravenis delivering a three-run double as part of a five-run frame after John Jay walked the bags full with no outs. Gianni Marano and Justin Marcario added RBI singles in the explosion. Zach Hochheiser's bases-clearing triple in the seventh helped TCNJ put the game away with another five-run inning.
