Fiehrer hits and pitches Marietta past North Central 8-4

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College downed North Central College for the second time in two days Wednesday (Mar. 12) afternoon by the score of 8-4. The Pioneers improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 2-8 overall.
 
The top four hitters in the Pioneer batting order collected nine hits, drove in five runs and scored five times. Marietta's offense finished the day with 14 base hits as five different Pioneers had multiple hit games.
 
Senior Zach Marzetz (1-0) started on the mound and got the win. He worked 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Matthew Farmer finished the sixth inning with a strikeout and Austin Ziance struck out the side in the seventh.
 
Cooper Fiehrer pitched the final 2.0 innings for his second save of the season. Fiehrer did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three. In the batter's box, Fiehrer went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
 
The Pioneers took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Fiehrer drove in the first run with an RBI single to right field. Shance Rothlisberger plated the second with a bases loaded ground out.
 
North Central scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth taking a 3-2 lead. But Marietta responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Fiehrer drove in Thomson Babineau and Cam Russell with another single to right.
 
The Pioneers added one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one more in the eighth for the 8-4 victory. Diego DeCello knocked in Will Loftus with a ground out in the fifth. Cael Magill had an RBI single in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth.
 
Magill finished 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Russell, Fiehrer, Babineau, and Jeremy Tonelli each had two hits in the game for the Etta Express.
 
Marietta hosts Johnson & Wales University Thursday (Mar. 13) at 3:30 p.m.
