Hilbert College took on Lesley University Thursday morning at the Ripken Classic in the first ever matchup between the Hawks and the Lynx. In a seven-inning contest, Hilbert improved to 5-4 on the spring break trip with a 7-3 victory. Jacob Kim-Kubiak and Brendan Walsh split the outing on the mound and limited the Lesley offense to runs in just two innings this morning. Garrett Brink and Harley Hoag (pictured) each recorded a pair of RBIs, while Alex Ellison and Nolan Evans led the Hawks with multi-hit games. Hilbert athletics photo |
Senior first baseman Daniel Trzepacz went 3-for-5 with five runs scored, two RBI and a walk as Rhode Island College crushed New England College, 28-1, in the club's spring trip finale on Thursday morning. The Anchormen ripped off nine runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. RIC pounded out 26 hits, which included five doubles and one triple, walked seven times and was hit by a pitch on four occasions. Sophomore pitcher Kolbie Stellpflug allowed one run on five hits and struck out four in seven innings of work to pick up the win (1-0). Fifth-year shortstop Izaiah Rivera went 3-for-5 with four RBI and a double. Junior catcher Sean Gallagher went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Tucker Gegenfurtner hit a grand slam as part of a six-RBI performance and Lakeland University threatened a school scoring record in a 27-5 rout of Alfred University Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational. The Muskies posted their largest scoring output in nearly 27 years and the second-most runs in a game in school history. Lakeland came close to the school record set in a 29-6 win at Maranatha Baptist University April 14, 1998, and improved to 5-5 overall this season, and 5-3 on its spring trip. Gegenfurtner and Sean Gregorius both hit home runs, including Gegenfurtner hitting a grand slam that was part of a 14-run fifth inning. Gregorius also added a three-run homer in the third inning as the Muskies scored three each in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 9-1 lead going into the massive fifth inning.
Edgewood entered another day in Florida with a doubleheader against a nonconference foe. They faced off with the Carroll Pios in a pair of games. The Pios (8-5) got the better of the Eagles (2-6) in a 12-0 game one, but Edgewood College struck back in a big way with a 24-10 victory in game two. Tyler Fredrick pitched a complete-game gem in the opener. He held Edgewood College to three hits and struck out four in seven innings. The tone for the nightcap was set in the first inning. The Eagles put three on the board in the first, including a two-run home run from Kyle Prindle, while the Pios left things 3-1 after one with a grounder to second. A seven-run third broke things wide open for the Eagles. Edgewood College would load the bases after an early run and took full advantage, three walks and a bunt each plating a run. The Eagles would lead 13-3 after three. Edgewood College blunted the Pios momentum in the seventh after the Eagles plated one in the sixth. In the eighth, Dominic Lee sent a triple down the left field line for three runs to put an exclamation point on the victory.
Cortland jumped out early thanks to home runs by Lucas Granger and Nick Marola, and cruised to an 11-3 victory over nationally seventh-ranked Trinity on Thursday evening in the first game of a four-game series between the two sides. Granger finished 2-for-4 with a homer, his first as a Red Dragon. He also delivered a double, two RBI, two walks, and three runs scored. Marola hit his first homer of the season, and drove in three runs and scored twice. JJ DeLawder was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Chris Bonacci recorded a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. Cortland starting pitcher Nick Jessen tossed four scoreless innings before being pulled due to a predetermined pitch count. He allowed just three hits and struck out five batters for the win to improve to 3-1 on the year. Matthew Nochowitz pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning, while Tommy Lynch threw two innings, allowing one run. Brady Mazzeo gave up two runs in the final two innings. Brandon Nelson went 2-for-4 with a home run, and Pierce Matthews finished 3-for-4 for the Tigers. Joey Hagen started on the mound and took the loss for Trinity, giving up six runs -four earned- over 1.2 innings.
Five pitchers scattered six hits and two runs over nine innings as Vassar College outdueled Oneonta, 3-2, at the RussMatt Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park. The Brewers improve to 3-3 overall on the season while Oneonta falls to 4-5 on the season. Oneonta scratched out a run in the top of the first as Josh Gilkey singled with one out and came around to score on a fielding error. Vassar answered in the bottom half of the inning as junior Jensen Bergman was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a RBI double from senior Daniel Laderman. The Brewers took the lead on a RBI single from sophomore Noah Stockman with two outs to go ahead 2-1. The Brewers added a run in the third following a leadoff single from senior Birch Herring-Jackson and Laderman cashed in his second RBI of the game on a single down the third base line. Oneonta trimmed the lead to one in the fifth as Nick Jacoby laced a leadoff triple to left center and was scored on a sacrifice fly from Gilkey. The trio of junior Danny Wellner, senior Collin Donnelly and senior Jack Blau held the Red Dragons off the board in the final four innings to take the 3-2 victory.
Bryce Bogan worked a two out, bases loaded walk giving Marietta College a 4-3 win over visiting Johnson & Wales University Thursday afternoon in the first game of the BSN Sports Invitational at Pioneer Park. Marietta improves to 7-4 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 3-7 on the season. Trailing the entire game, Marietta plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 3-2 lead. Brennan Stobbs took over on the mound for Jared Bees to start the ninth inning for the Pioneers and allowed the tying run. Stobbs struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Wildcat pitcher Garrett Fusco retired the first two Pioneer batters on ground balls in the infield. Will Loftus reached on an error by the second baseman and moved to second on a wild pitch. A second miscue by the JWU second baseman allowed Diego DeCello to reach safely and Loftus moved over to third. Russell was intentionally walked loading the bases. Bogan pinch hit for Jameson Embrescia and ran the count full before receiving the base on balls that gave Marietta the walk-off victory.
UW-Whitewater started off hot to get up big against Sewanee, The University of the South. The Warhawks (6-0) carried the momentum forward, defeating the Tigers (11-7) on Thursday, 10-2. The Warhawks didn't waste any time, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and three in the second. The middle of the game went by quick, as both teams pitching & defense took center stage. The Tigers broke the stall with a single in the top of the 6th. The Warhawks answered back in a big way in the 7th. After three straight Ks from George Hansen in relief, the Warhawks blasted 5 runs to go up 10-1. Sewanee added another run in the top of the ninth, but the Warhawks came away with the 10-2 win over the University of the South.
Case Western Reserve University wrapped up its time at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina with a 5-3 win over Swarthmore College on Thursday. CWRU won its last five games at the tournament, finishing the event 5-1 and improving to 8-4 overall. Swarthmore fell to 6-8 with the loss. CWRU senior right-handed starter Jackson Brewer allowed three runs in the top of the first but settled in from there, holding the Garnet scoreless over the rest of his four-inning start. Brewer allowed three runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in the no-decision. Eric Colgrove earned the first win of his career, improving to 1-0, after holding Swarthmore scoreless on one hit and a walk with three strikeouts. Zach Barnes earned his first save of the season with the three shutout innings. The Spartans outhit Swarthmore 13-4 on Thursday. Jack Anderson finished the game three-for-five with a solo home run, while Nick Harms added a two-for-five effort with a double, a stolen base, a run, and an RBI. Anderson now has 248 career hits, the third-most in program history. He is two hits away from matching former Spartan Matt Keen for the second-most in program history and 15 shy of the program record of 263 hits, currently held by Chad Mullins (2008-11).
Webster University played their fifth game in the Sunshine State with a rematch decision against Rhodes College on Thursday. WU's R.J. LaRocco was a triple away from the cycle as he recorded four hits and drove in a season-high five RBI's that led to a 10-2 victory over the Lynx. With the victory, Webster improves to 8-5 overall on the season and 3-2 in Florida. In addition to LaRocco, James Theodore had a four-hit day that included one RBI. On the mound, Carter Hunt pitched five innings, struck out four, and was credited for the win. Relievers Cullen McBride and Jack Wilson pitched two innings each and combined for three strikeouts.
No. 2 Salve Regina University baseball ended their time in Florida at the RussMatt Invitational with a 3-1 win over Russell Sage College, putting them at 4-2 this week and 9-2 overall. Salve Regina's three runs crossed the plate in three different innings. A double, a single, a walk and a hit by pitch advanced Brandon Grover across the plate to give the team from Rhode Island an advantage. While the Gators tied it up by the third inning. Shea Donovan's single in the fourth inning allowed Shane Williams to score with what would be the game winning run. Hunter Yaworski, as a pinch hitter in the eighth, brought Christian Homa in after he reached base with a single.
Getting contributions up and down the entire lineup, 18th-ranked Christopher Newport ended a four-game skid with a complete effort on Thursday afternoon, downing Roanoke College (8-7-1) by an 8-1 final score. Junior starter Cooper Newell threw eight strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing just a single run to the Maroons while the offense collected 11 hits from eight different players. On top of Newell's impressive start, the Captains got contributions from all nine in the starting lineup, including the return of Sam Benedict after missing the last five games to an injury. Benedict was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a pair of walks. He also had five assists at third base to help a strong overall defensive performance. Aaron Maxie was a team-best 3-for-5 at the dish with an RBI, run scored, and one double while Ayden Stuffel added a multi-hit showing by going 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and a walk. Six different players finished the game with a run batted in, including Justin Liakos, Doc Daniels, Cameron Slough, and Eric Wilson.
Emerson College collected a 13-5 win over Albertus Magnus. Emerson snagged an early 1-0 lead, chalking up one run in the top of the first inning. Albertus Magnus tallied three runs in the bottom of the first to capture a 3-1 edge. he Lions manufactured five runs in the fourth frame to claim a 6-3 advantage. Emerson generated three runs in the fifth to widen the margin to 9-3. The Falcons plated a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 9-5. The Lions added four runs in the sixth to stretch the gap to 13-5.
Phil Sedalis hit two home runs, Jason Morgan had four hits, and Mike Shannon threw a complete game as #17 Rowan defeated Washington & Jefferson, 14-1, in seven innings as the Profs opened play in the RussMatt Invitational. Sedalis was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI while it marked his second career game with two homers, going back to his first appearance as a Prof at Virginia Wesleyan in 2023. The senior now has four home runs on the season. Morgan was 4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI, while Brayden Davis went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Tyler Cannon, Joey Bogart and Marco Mannino notched two hits apiece for Rowan (5-1), with Bogart picking up three RBI. Shannon upped his record to 3-0 as the righthander allowed just one run and five hits, and struck out four.
No. 3-ranked Johns Hopkins faced Mitchell (2-11) in its first game of their spring break, Thursday afternoon, holding the Mariners scoreless 12-0. The Blue Jay bats had a keen eye for the baseball in the blowout win, scoring six of its 12 runs on either a hit batter, walk or wild pitch. Hopkins (10-0) jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first run of the game with some help from mother nature. A popup from Caleb Cyr, caught in the wind, dropped, scoring Alex Shane, proving to be the winning run. Shawn Steuerer then delivered a solo shot in the third, extending the Jays lead to two and his hit streak to five games. Hopkins continued to add insurance runs, scoring five in the sixth, ultimately allowing the Jays to meet the run-rule threshold of 10 runs after seven innings. Blue Jay pitching was stellar in the opening game of the RussMatt Invitational, with Kieren Collins throwing five innings of one-hit baseball, retiring all but two batters, improving to 4-0 on the season. In relief, Cole Eggleston and Matt Savedoff combined to throw the final two innings, with Eggleston allowing just one hit and Savedoff striking out two.
Sophomore Sam Salvi delivered a clutch RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to propel Plymouth State University to a 1-0 victory over Bates College in a season-opening pitcher’s duel at Leahey Field on Thursday afternoon. Locked in a scoreless battle, junior Chris Faherty led off the 10th with a single and was sacrificed to second. Salvi followed with a sharp single through the left side, allowing Faherty to race home for the game’s only run. Sophomore Greg Mayo closed out the win, recording two quick outs in the bottom of the frame. The Bobcats worked a walk to put the tying run on base, but Mayo induced a grounder to shortstop to secure his first career save. Senior Jason Smith, junior Alex Noel and Mayo combined to limit Bates to just three hits over ten dominant innings while striking out 11 Bobcats.
WPI swept its doubleheader against Bridgewater State on Thursday night, taking game one 10-5 before securing a 7-4 victory in the nightcap at Ripken Field in Myrtle Beach. With the wins, the Engineers improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Bears dropped to 2-6. WPI scored nine runs in the first three innings and never looked back, pounding out a 10-5 win in the first game of the doubleheader. Tommy Burns led the WPI offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Andrew Cash went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including an RBI triple. Jonathan Lattimer also had two hits and drove in a run, while Jacob Wiberg added two hits and an RBI. WPI completed the doubleheader sweep over Bridgewater State with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap. The Engineers built an early lead and held off a late push from the Bears. Lattimer led the Engineers' offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including two run-scoring singles. Chuck Cappello delivered a two-run triple, while Cash added an RBI single and stole a base. Shea chipped in an RBI single, and Wiberg scored three runs and swiped a base.
University of Northwestern (Minn.) gor their first win of the 2025 season came in style on Thursday morning. The Eagles racked up 18 hits and committed zero errors in a 14-2 drubbing of Penn State University Behrend at Lawnwood Baseball Complex. There was no shortage of phenomenal performances by the purple and gold on Thursday. Aaron Severson went 5-7 with four RBI to lead the charge. Braden Storts (who scored four runs) and Mark Bligh each tallied three hits and an RBI apiece. The pitching performances were equally as impressive as the bats, as Nick Drinken earned his first win of the season after going 6.1 innings while giving up six hits, two earned runs, and striking out four. Dreyer Homan only gave up one hit and struck out three in his 1.2 innings of work, while Beau Rabey pitched a perfect ninth and struck out one.
UMass Dartmouth held off a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, securing a 5-4 victory over Penn State Altoona on Thursday at Northeast Regional Park. The Corsairs move to 3-5 on the season, while the Nittany Lions are now 5-5 overall. Into the top of the seventh, Mass-Dartmouth once again got the bats swinging making it a 5-1 advantage. Penn State Altoona attempted to surge back cutting the lead to 5-4 in the eighth. Penn State looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth as a walk and a single put runners on first and second with two outs on the board. After a wild pitch moved both the runners into scoring position, Nick Bartalini got the final out, getting Jake Hillard to strike out swinging to wrap up the Corsairs win and secure the save.
