Orange, Calif. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team swept a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to pick up their first two wins of the season.

  • 500 Wins: With the win in game one, Chris Schwarz wins his 500th game as head coach of the Eagles. The winningest coach in program history, Schwarz is now 501-331-2 at the helm of the program.

    Up Next: UWL will finish up their weekend travels in California with a single game versus Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) on Sunday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CST.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One

  • Chapman scored first as they got an RBI single from Brad Lang in the bottom of the first inning.
  • UWL would tie the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Keegan Fleischman which scored Anthony Vivian who had led of the inning with a walk.
  • Then in the third inning, Chris VandenHeuvel led off with a single and stole second. After a ground out, Jack Olver walked to put runners on first and second. Then with two outs, Vivian hit his first home run of the season to give UWL a 4-1 lead.
  • Josh Phillips led off the their half of the third inning with a solo home run. Austin Dudas would drive a run in with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Panthers deficit to 4-3.
  • With UWL still leading 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning, the Eagles would score four runs on four hits extend their lead to 8-3. Vivian would drive in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly while Calvin Hargove made it 6-3 with an RBI double. Fleischman would that with an RBI single to make the score 7-3. Emiliano Ramos would drive in the final run of the inning with an RBI ground out.

Game Two

  • UWL got on the scoreboard during their first at bat as Olver drove in Mac Born with a single while George Seaman followed with an RBI double to score Olver.
  • The Eagles would add a run in the second inning as Andrew Rajkovich led off with a double and scored on a single by Eli Roberts.
  • Fleishman led off the fourth with a walk and advanced to third on a throwing error. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Alec Campbell reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Born single would score Campbell while Olver drove in Vivian when he reached on a fielders choice to put UWL up 6-0.
  • The Eagles would make it 7-1 in the top of the fifth as Rajkovich doubled to score Seaman who had walked to lead of the inning and advanced to second on Luke Walton single. In the Chapman's half of the fifth inning, the Panthers scored three runs on two hits and an error to cut their deficit to 7-4. Lang provided the big hit for the Panthers as he drove in two runs with a single.
  • Roberts would put the Eagles up 8-4 with a sacrifice bunt to score Fleischman as the Eagles had loaded the bases with three straight walks. The Panthers would get two runs on three hits and an error to cut their deficit to 8-6 after seven innings.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
Game One

  • Offensively, UWL finished with eight runs on nine hits and four walks.
  • Fleischman led the Eagles by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
    Vivian finished 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Olver went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • Owen Deprez (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Eagles as he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks in 5.0 innings of work. Deprez also finished with eight strikeouts.
  • AJ Curtis pitched the final 4.0 innings to earn his first save of the season as allowed four hits and a walk while striking out four.
  • Josh Phillips led the Panthers going 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI and run scored.
  • Graham Stogner suffered the loss for the Panthers as he allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six in 5.0 innings.

Game Two

  • Offensively, UWL finished with 8 runs on 10 hits and 11 walks.
  • Born led the Eagles going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Rajkovich was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Also finishing with multiple hits for the Eagles was Seaman who finished 2-for-2 with three walks, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Chayce Osterhaus (1-0) earned the win for the Eagles as he allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in 5.0 innings of work. Caleb Matl earned his first save of the season by pitching the final four innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three.
  • Colin Godfrey suffered the loss for the Panthers as he allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in 3.1 innings.
