KOKOMO, Ind. -- The Earlham College baseball team won the 2022 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 10-9 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the final round on Saturday. The Quakers will earn an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament and will learn their next destination in the selection show on Monday.

Christian Lancianese earned tournament MVP honors and he was joined by Justin Dillhoff, Cameron McCabe and Jacob Renner on the all-tournament team.

Dillon Fischer earned the win in the game with 4.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts while Dillhoff picked up a save after coming in during the ninth inning.

Zach Swearingen recorded three RBI on the evening with a home run in the top of the second inning. Easton Embry had two hits on four at-bats and two RBI. Andrew Bradley had two doubles and one RBI in the game.

The Quakers scored first in the top of the first inning from a sac fly by Bradley to bring Nathan Lancianese home. The runs continued in the second inning when Swearingen hit his second collegiate home run over the deep left field fence for a 3-run shot.

Trailing 4-0, the Engineers plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning, Jeordon Kuderer earned an RBI walk to give another run for the Quakers.

McCabe brought both Lancianese brothers home with a two-run single to left field in the top of the fourth inning. The Quakers went on to load the bases again in the inning, but could not capitalize.

The Engineers scored one run each in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to put EC up 7-5 going into the sixth.

Embry recorded a two-RBI triple in the sixth inning with a ball put in play deep in right field.

By the seventh inning, the Quakers were running out of arms in the bullpen and rotated frequently. Rose-Hulman scored on a two-RBI double in the bottom of the frame with two outs, but Ealrham managed to get the batter out on his stretch to third base.

After a triple to start the eighth inning, the Engineers pulled off a sac fly to score a run before the final inning.

The Quakers arrived at the top of their lineup at the start of the ninth inning in their last chance to add runs. Christian Lancianese survived a dropped foul ball to earn a lead-off walk for the inning. After a passed ball, Nathan Lancianese brought his brother home with an RBI single to left field. The Engineer defense stranded two Quaker runners on base end the half-inning.

Renner popped out his first batter faced in the ninth inning, but allowed two runners off of the next two batters. Dillhoff came in with one out and two runners on base to hold onto the two-run lead for Earlham to win the tournament. Dillhoff induced a pop-out on his first batter, then allowed an RBI single to cut the lead to just one run with a single out remaining. With a 2-2 count, the Engineers hit into a fielder's choice to Swearingen at shortstop for the out at second base.

The Quakers will await the Division III Baseball selection show on Monday to find out where they will be traveling for next weekend's regional tournament.
