TYSONS, Va. --- Weather altered the format of the ODAC baseball championship, but the University of Lynchburg did not seem to care. The Hornets played the minimum amount of contests in posting three victories over the course of three days at Capital One Park to claim the program's 11th overall and second straight league title with a 9-4 victory over Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon in Tysons, Va.
The Hornets (30-15) are the first 30-game winner in a conference that saw its best -- and their very good -- beat up on each during the regular season. Lynchburg's two consecutive crowns give the club its third win in four seasons and mark the Hornets first back-to-back run since they won five straight titles from 1980-84.
Lynchburg receives the ODAC's automatic entry to the Division III Baseball Championship. The NCAA selection show is slated for 12:00 p.m. ET on Monday on ncaa.com.
Righty Colin McGuire gave the Hornets 6.1 strong innings on Saturday to earn the victory for the second time in as many days after picking up the "W" with 1.1 innings to finish a 7-6 triumph over Roanoke (26-20) on Friday night. He earned a spot on the ODAC All-Tournament Team, an outfit that featured seven total Lynchburg standouts including MOP Wesley Arrington following his no-hitter of top-seeded and 19th-ranked Randolph-Macon College on Thursday. It marked the 10th no-no in Division III baseball this season.
Walks plagued the Roanoke pitching staff all afternoon with five of their seven arms issuing at least one of 12 free passes. Lynchburg outfielder Quinn Madden enjoyed one base-on-balls as part of a monster 3-for-5 day where he drove in four runs, scored twice, and made several outstanding plays in right and right-center field.
Lynchburg got started early with three runs in the top of the first. Madden drove in shortstop Brandon Garcia with a single, while second baseman Benton Jones scored on a grounder by catcher Sean Pokorak and Madden came around on a single by third baseman Gavin Collins.
Roanoke got one back in the third inning. Third baseman Hayden Giordano found the first kink in McGuire's with an RBI single back up the middle to plate leftfielder Corey Coogan.
The Hornets returned their lead to four runs when Madden walked with bases load to plate O'Kelly McWilliams IV in the fourth frame. McWilliams made it 5-1 Lynchburg in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Collins.
Roanoke's offense forced McGuire from the game in the seventh inning after singles by centerfielder Nate Prince and rightfielder Dylan Bonzon put two runners on with one down. Mason McDowell relieved McGuire and got shortstop Jonny Wall to flight, but second baseman and ODAC Rookie of the Year Kyle Moshier belted a three-run blast to center to cut Lynchburg's edge to 5-4.
Lynchburg was quick again to restore its four-run advantage. McWilliams led off the eighth with a single and Jones followed two batters later with a walk. Madden doubled in McWilliams with a shot to left. After Jones was thrown out at home on a bang-bang play trying to score on a fielder's choice to third, first baseman Josh Gjormand singled to right center to bring around Madden.
The Hornets scored two more in the top of the ninth to put the game to bed. Jones singled to center to plate McWilliams with Madden following with an RBI single through the right side to score Garcia.
McGuire improved to 4-1 with the win. He gave up three runs on eight hits with three walks and a punchout. Logan Tapman earned his second save of the season by tossing the final 2.1 frames. He gave up just one hit and fanned a pair of the eight batters he faced.
