CNU gets 14 shutout innings for a big win, Behrend upsets 'Jackets

No. 1 nationally ranked Endicott erased an early deficit to take down the NAC Champion Husson Eagles, 6-2, on Friday afternoon at the Mansfield, Conn. Regional. Endicott will play SUNY New paltz. In its first NCAA tournament matchup, SUNY New Paltz defeated the No. 2 seeded and No. 22 nationally ranked Eastern Connecticut State Warriors, 5-2, to secure its place in the regional round's winners bracket.

Playing in the longest game in program history, the 10th-ranked Christopher Newport found the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth before walking it off against Immaculata University (26-17) in the bottom of the 15th, 3-2. Sophomore Josh Reinhold delivered a one-out double to the wall in right field to chase home pinch runner Gus Croll for the game-winning blow after nine pitchers combined to surrender just five runs in the first game of the NCAA Newport News Regional. Facing a 2-1 deficit in their final at-bat, Zach Dzarnowski led off the bottom of the ninth with a pivotal single into center field. Rookie Jacob Koenig pinch ran for the DH and promptly moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lincoln Lubsen. Coming through with the game-tying knock was sophomore outfielder Ayden Stuffel, who blistered a groundball up the middle to allow Koenig to make the turn around third for home. The throw was off line and the Captains tied the game, 2-2. CNU nearly walked it off in the ninth when Aaron Maxie launched a two-out fly ball to right field, but the Immaculata outfielder made a sensational diving play to save the game, at least momentarily, for the Mighty Macs.

A Daniel Boehme three-run home run was the eventual game-winning hit in a 10-4 victory for Penn State Behrend over the host No. 3 Baldwin Wallace in the first game of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament Friday afternoon. Colin Bolla pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Joe Lang picked up his second win of the season with 4.2 shutout innings, allowing only one hit with three strikeouts out of the bullpen. ​At the plate, Boehme and Thomas Nicely each finished with a game-high three hits and three RBIs. Boehme finished a triple short of the cycle. ​The Lions recorded a baserunner in every inning with all but one Lion tallying a hit on Friday. ​The last NCAA Tournament win for Behrend was an 11-1 victory on May 28, 2021, against Rochester. Adrian College earned its 30th win of the season in the first-round game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. The 13th-ranked Trinity (Texas) Tigers opened its best-of-five NCAA Regional Series with an 18-9 victory over #16 University of La Verne on Friday afternoon. The Tigers (32-12) jumped on top of the Leopards (27-14-1) early with a nine-run first inning that led to a 16-0 lead after three innings. The two teams combined for 37 total hits, and La Verne scored all nine of its runs in the last five innings. Kaleb Woodward and Nicholas Lazzara drove in four runs each to lead the Tiger offense, while Jack Peterson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Woodward and Lazzara had three hits each, though Woodward also scored four times to account for nearly half of Trinity's runs in the game. Cristian Holloway also had three hits in the game, and Ty Preston and Kai Tinker scored three times each. Preston and Colt Harris both had two hits for the Tigers, with Harris and Maddox McDonald both scoring twice. Jackson Teer left the game after three innings due to the lopsided score, allowing two hits and striking out six batters. Michael Boeke got the final three outs to snag the win and improve to 3-2 this season.

With a mighty two-out swing in the bottom of the ninth, Brendan Henn lifted No. 14 Penn State Harrisburg to a thrilling 5-3, walk-off victory over Bridgewater State on Friday afternoon in the first game of the NCAA Regional hosted by Penn State Harrisburg. Henn was 2-for-5 with a two-run walk-off blast and a double, while Coy Schwanger had a three-hit day. Josh Berzonski earned the win, throwing three hitless innings of relief after starter Danny Eden went six frames with four strikeouts. Junior Bere Bauers tossed 7.1 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, senior Grayson Bush had two doubles and a run, and sophomore Eli Brooks had two RBI as 22nd-ranked and second-seeded Randolph-Macon blanked third-seeded Elizabethtown 4-0 in the first round of the Harrisburg Regional.

Misericordia University advanced to the winner's bracket final of the NCAA Baseball Regional Championships with a 5-2 come-from-behind win over St. John Fisher, Friday morning at Tambur Field. Joe Valenti and Matt Lanzendorfer combined on a seven-hitter and held the Cardinals scoreless over the final eight innings. Garrett McIlhenney broke up a no-hitter with a two-out bunt single in the sixth and Jack Regenye followed with an infield single, but both runners were stranded with the Cards holding on to a 2-0 lead. The Cougars then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and Connor Maryniak added some insurance with a long home run in the eighth. Lanzendorfer retired all six batters he faced, including three strikeouts, to earn his fifth save. Keystone College opened the Dallas Regional with a 10-5 win over Middlebury College. Nate Ewing went 5-for-5 with an RBI. Justin Mann tallied three hits with three runs batted in. Robert Estrada and Jacob Yager each had two hits. Brayan Villar was the starting pitcher in the first game and went seven innings with four punch outs. Dylan Byler and Drew Sorrentino each pitched an inning in relief.

Ninth-ranked Salisbury University got some early pop at the plate and a strong start from Tyler Villa en route to a 7-0 shutout win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to open the Babson Park Regional of the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament on Friday morning at Govoni Field. The Sea Gulls brought the big lumber early. Andrew Kell led off the first inning with a walk, then two batters later Danny Sheeler clubbed a two-run home run down the right field line to put SU in the driver's seat, 2-0. In the second, Adam Tommer and Zach Geesaman strung together back-to-back one-out singles to put men on the corners, then Max Ehrhardt laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Tommer. Geesaman in turn scored on a throwing error at short off the bat of Kell to make it 4-0. Tim Petrucelli singled to lead off the fifth and Sheeler doubled to put two men in scoring position. Two batters later Kyle Brex tagged a two-run single up the middle and took second on an error. Trent Waire in turn singled Brex home to boost the Sea Gull margin to 7-0. Tyler Villa was unflappable on the hill, shutting down the Corsairs for seven innings before handing the ball to Cole Williams for the final two to finish off the clean sheet. Mitchell College kicked off their NCAA Tournament run by outlasting No. 21 Babson College 4-3 on Friday afternoon in the second game of the Babson Park Regional at Govoni Field. Junior Chris Gibbs tossed a complete game for the Mariners, scattering six hits and three runs (two earned), walking one and striking out seven. Freshman Michael Ficocelli led the Mitchell offense, finishing with three hits, including the go-ahead single in the eighth inning. Senior Robbie DelaCruz went 2-3 with two walks and scored a pair of runs, while Cole Lalli Jack Hayes and Michael Gajda each drove in a run.

Top-seeded and sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins had three pitchers combine for a one-hitter and the Blue Jay offense hit four home runs to fuel a 12-1 win over St. Joseph's (LI) in the first game of the NCAA Baltimore Regional at Babb Field Friday afternoon. While the Blue Jay bats were heating up, graduate student Kieran Collins was efficiently taking care of things on the mound. He gave head coach Bob Babb seven strong innings of one-hit ball with seven strikeouts against just one walk. The only hit he allowed was a bunt single by leadoff hitter Joe Hackal in the fourth. Anthony Bruno's five RBI's and nine shutout innings from Will Conroy and Vinny Versaci helped No. 20 Arcadia University open the 2024 NCAA Division III Baltimore Regional with a 7-0 win over Ramapo at Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon. Bruno broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer to left bringing in Gabe Diaz and Matt Donchez.

Hunter Rumachik and Dylan Burnaman each had two hits of the six for the team. Rumachik posted two RBI and had a home run while Connor Massimini had one RBI on a solo home run. Jagger Neely went six innings for his 10th win of the year striking out three batters and allowing just one earned run. Peyton Miller pitched the final three innings for his second save of the year giving up no runs or hits with one strikeout. Behind home runs from graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen and graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso and a solid start from senior southpaw Reese Marley, seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University opened NCAA postseason play with a 7-4 win over Alvernia University on Friday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. Marley earned the win to raise his record to 6-2 for the season. The victory was the 20th of his career, as he became just the fourth pitcher in program history with 20 or more victories over a career. Fans who watched the opening game and stayed got treated to more good pitching. University of Lynchburg baseball graduate student Wesley Arrington pitched his second consecutive complete game on Friday leading the Hornets to a 3-1 win over Ithaca. Arrington allowed an unearned run in the first against the Bombers, but after allowing two of the first three batters to reach, Arrington retired 22 of the next 28 batters he faced.

After building a 5-2 lead in the first five innings, Willamette University pulled away with an eight-run outburst in the sixth inning for a 13-2 lead, as the Bearcats defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 13-8, in the first game of an NCAA Division III two-team regional. The Bearcats need two more victories in the best-of-five series with the Sagehens to win the regional and advance to a super regional. Joshua Murphy smacked a solo home run to start huge sixth inning for the Bearcats. On Friday, the Bearcats registered 13 hits. Tassos Foster was 3 for 5 with a walk, two runs, and three RBIs. Clint Walker was 2 of 4 with a stolen base and two RBIs. Rocco Granucci was 2 of 4 with a double, two walks, two runs, and two RBIs. Jeff Hoffman added a 2 for 6 performance with one run and one RBIs.

W-La Crosse opened National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Regional play with a 19-2 win over Bethel University Friday afternoon at Copeland Park. Offensively, UWL finished with 19 runs on 23 hits and three walks. UWL's 23 hits, ties for sixth in school history. It ties UWL's NCAA III record set vs. Beloit College in 2016 and UW-Stevens Point in 2023. The Eagles finished with five home runs and five hitters with at least three hits including Witte (3-for-5), Mac Born (3-for-4), Andrew Rajkovich (4-for-6), Jack Olver (3-for-4) and Anthony Vivian (3-for-4). Tyler Schmitt (4-3) earned the win for the Eagles as he allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out five in seven innings of work.

No. 2 nationally-ranked and top-seeded Denison University began its quest for its first NCAA World Series appearance in program history with a 15-1 win in a two-hitter over fourth-seeded Hanover College in the very first game of the Granville Regional in the 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament. In a game that started five hours after it was originally scheduled to due to weather, the Big Red bats had no problem getting going. Taking on the 2023 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in Marcus Goodpaster (5-2), Denison was able to score at least three runs in each of the first three innings and scored 10 runs on nine hits after just three innings.

Luke Wechsler shut out the Centre Colonels across 7.2 innings of work to lead Cal Lutheran to a dominant 7-0 victory in its opening game of the NCAA Championship on Friday afternoon. Wechsler (W) led the Kingsmen (29-14) to a 1-0 start in the dance with a dominant performance on the mound. He gave up four hits and four walks while striking out three, including a stretch where he retired 12 straight batters. It is his third appearance this year allowing no runs. The Kingsmen scored in six of the nine innings and outhit the Colonels (34-12) 15 to 4 in a successful and consistent offensive day. UW-Whitewater opened up the 2024 NCAA DIII Regional with a 9-2 win over Crown College. Offensively, Andy Thies tallied four RBIs with his two home runs, Adam Cootway and Sam Paden had two RBIs each with Frank recording one. Defensively, Max Huseboe picked up the win, his fifth of the season. Huseboe only had six hits in his 7.0 innings on the mound, fanning 9 batters total with no walks. Logan Kottmeyer and Sava Dupor split the final two innings, with neither allowing a hit. Dupor only needed 5 pitches in the top of the ninth to close out the game.
