WINCHESTER , Va. – No. 6/7 Shenandoah University opened its 2011 baseball season with a 10-3 non-conference victory over King's (Pa.) afternoon.

Senior Greg Van Sickler (1-0) became the all-time wins leader at Shenandoah with the victory on the mound while leading SU (1-0) with three hits at the plate.

On the mound, Van Sickler allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk in 5.0 innings of work.

Senior Kevin Brashears, like Van Sickler a pre-season All-America selection, scored the Hornets first run of the game by drawing a walk to lead off the SU first and eventually scored on a Mike Smith groundout. After King's tied the game with a two-run third, SU got all of the offense would need for Van Sickler with three runs in its half of the frame.

Smith, who led off the Hornet third by reaching on an error, scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Van Sickler then came across with what proved to be the game-winning run on a Cory Nelson RBI single.

Van Sickler led the victors at the plate with three hits in five at-bats while Brashears and catcher Keaton Neeb had two each.
