DOVER, Del. - Five Wesley College pitchers combined to allow just nine hits over 14 innings as the Wolverines swept a season opening doubleheader from Albright.
In the opener, DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Jordan Lozzi (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) combined on a three-hit shutout, while the trio of Ryan Doran (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), Zach Stuart (Palmyra, Pa/Palmyra Area) and Andrew Cooper (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) followed suit with a six-hit shutout in the nightcap.
An RBI single by Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) that scored Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) in the first inning of the opener put the Wolverines on top 1-0.
Keckler, meanwhile, kept the Lions off balance, facing just one batter over the minimum and striking out five batters.
After allowing the run in the first, Matt Rehrig settled in for Albright and did not not allow another hit until the fifth. Seth Hastings (Seaford, Del./Sussex Tech) led off Wesley's half of the frame with a single and later scored on a Billy Crowe (Newark, Del./Salesianum) double to make it 2-0 Wolverines.
Wesley added two more runs for good measure in the sixth. Steve Perone (Skillman, N.J./Montogomery) doubled in Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and later scored himself on a base hit by Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney).
Lozzi scattered two hits over the final two innings to notch a save in his first appearance as a Wolverine.
Kimmel had two hits to lead an offensive attack that saw eight of the team's nine regulars reach base.
In the nightcap, Wesley scored three times in the first and then added single runs each of the next three innings.
Benedict led off the Wesley half of the first with a double, then scored on a single by Corey Jefferson (Wilmington, Del./Archmere). Hastings drove home two more later in the inning with a hit that plated both Murphy and Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech).
Murphy scored his second run of the game in the second, when he came home on a Kimmel single. After Casey Rothwell (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) knocked in a run in the third, Murphy scored for the third time on an error in the fourth.
Doran, meanwhile, scattered three hits and two walks over five innings and struck out five to pick up the win. Stuart and Cooper each tossed scoreless frames in relief.
Albright had its best opportunity to score in the seventh inning of game two, loading the bases with two outs before Cooper induced a ground ball to second to finish the game.
Benedict, Kimmel, Murphy and Hastings had two hits each in the game.
Six different players had hits for the Lions.
Wesley is idle until Gallaudet visits Bob Reed Field on February 19 at 12:30 PM.
