WINCHESTER, Va. – In a game that lived up to all that Shenandoah baseball fans hoped for, the No. 6/7 Hornets defeated No. 2/4 Cortland State 2-0 in non-league action Friday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.

Senior All-American Greg Van Sickler (2-0) struck out seven and walked two in eight innings of work before turning it over to junior Kyle Scallion for the final three outs.

Scallion earned his first save of the spring with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.

The win for SU (2-0) over the second-ranked Red Dragons (0-1) represents the highest ranked opponent that Shenandoah has ever defeated.

The Hornets got all of the game's offense in the fourth as Van Sickler led off the frame being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Cory Nelson single through the left side.

Following a double steal, Jake Pendergraft drove in Van Sickler with a bouncer just over the mound for the first run of the game.

Nelson made it 2-0 three pitches later as he scampered home on a wild pitch.

The two runs were all that Van Sickler needed, as he got stronger as they game moved along.

After allowing the Red Dragons to load the bases in the second, Van Sickler allowed just three baserunners the rest of the way and retired nine in a row from the fourth through seventh innings.

Cortland's only hit in the final seven innings was a John Adornetto single to center with two outs in the seventh.

Van Sickler led the victors at the plate with two hits, including a double, in three plate appearances.

Shenandoah hosts Misericordia tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
