Murphy Ties Wesley Hit Record in Sweep

More news about: Wesley

DOVER, Del. - Wesley hung on to win game one before using a Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) home run in game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting CCNY, 10-9 and 7-3.

In the process, Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) bunted his way to a 40-game hit streak and tied Wesley's career hit record.  The senior, who surpassed the CAC's record of 36 games the previous day, had a bunt single for the first of two hits in the opener, then bunted for his only hit of the nightcap in the fifth inning.

The hit in game two gave him 15 on the year and 198 for his career, tying former teammate Grant Morlock's career mark.

Murphy is now tied for the sixth longest hitting streak in Division III history and one of just 25 in all three NCAA divisions with a hitting streak of at least 40 games.

Game one looked like an easy win for the Wolverines (8-1), who led 9-2 going into the seventh.  But the Beavers (0-6) took advantage of some lapse in control by the Wesley bullpen, scoring seven runs on just one hit in the inning.  Three Wolverines combined to walk six batters and hit one, in addition to a fielding error in the inning.

Wesley returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, however, taking the win 10-9 with a walk off hit by pitch by Murphy.  The Wolverines had loaded the bases when Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Jon Carlson (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) were hit by pitches and CCNY had walked Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) intentionally.

Shane Yost (Wilmington, Del./Concord) was credited with the win in just 0.2 innings of relief.  Jake Dunn (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) got the start and held the Beavers to just an unearned run in five innings, striking out seven.

Murphy had a pair of hits and drove in three runs in the contest.  Billy Crowe (Newark, Del./Salesianum) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and catcher Casey Rothwell (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) also had a pair of hits.

Andrew Romanella, Michael Smith and Henry Loehrke had two hits apiece for the Beavers.

Joseph Curto took the loss, allowing three runs in 3.2 innings of relief.

In game two, Reshetar hit a three-run homer in the first inning, but the Wolverines scored four times in their last two at bats to take a 7-3 win and the sweep.

Carlson and Murphy both walked in the first and scored on a two-out blast to right by Reshetar.

CCNY tied the score in the third when Romanella ripped a two-run double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Perez.

In the fifth, Carlson singled with one out and Murphy followed with a perfectly placed bunt single down the third base line.  Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) singled in Carlson before both he and Murphy came home on a double by Corey Jefferson (Wilmington, Del./Archmere)

Carlson knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Yost got his second win of the day tossing 1.1 innings in relief of AJ Robledo (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Florida Air Academy).  Robledo allowed just two hits in four innings, before Yost, Andrew Cooper (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston) held CCNY hitless over the final three frames.

Reshetar and Jefferson had two hits apiece and combined to drive in five runs in the contest.

The Wolverines have now won four straight and will look to stay in the win column with a trip to Washington (Md.) for a single game on March 2.
