St. Louis, Mo., March 4, 2011 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team pounded out a season-high 13 hits but it was not enough as the Bears suffered a 16-10 loss to No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday afternoon at Kelly Field in St. Louis, Mo.

UW-Whitewater (2-0), the 2005 NCAA Division III National Champion, outscored the Bears 27-11 in the two-game sweep and pounded out 28 hits. The Warhawks had 16 hits in the game two win on Friday.

Washington University (2-4) continues its eight-game home stand with a single game against No. 10 University of St. Thomas on Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Monday, March 7, at 12:30 p.m., against No. 18 St. Scholastica.

Washington U. fell behind first for the fourth time this season following an RBI single by Rob Coe with no one out in the top of the first. The Warhawks had first and second with no outs, but WUSTL starter Max Gordon got out of the jam to keep it a one-run game.

The Bears answered back with two runs in the second to take its first lead in two games against the Warhawks. Senior Travis May walked to leadoff the inning, followed by a single to center by senior Matt Bayer. Sophomore David Madson doubled home May to tie the score, and then sophomore Greg Gleicher grounded to first to make it 2-1.

UW-Whitewater answered back with two runs in the third, but it could have been more. The Warhawks got the first four runners on base, but WUSTL relief pitcher Matt Kenehan got three ground balls in a row off knuckle balls to keep it 3-2. WUSTL answered back with a run of its own the third on an RBI single by Bayer to knot the score at 3-3.

The Warhawks added a run in the fourth inning, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-3. The Bears would not go away, as RBI singles by senior Miguel Davis and freshman Kyle Billig in the fifth trimmed the advantage down to 9-6. That would be as close as Washington U. would get as the Warhawks scored six runs in the seventh to take a commanding 15-6 lead.

Washington U. scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI singles by sophomore Andrew Dwoskin and Billig and a two-RBI single by senior Ben Ingell. Madson was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Bayer, Billig Dwoskin added two hits apiece.

Gordon lasted just two innings in his first start of the year, allowing four hits and three earned runs. Kenehan took the loss for the Bears allowing five hits and four earned runs in three innings pitched. Jeff Donovan got the win for UW-Whitewater despite getting roughed up for seven hits and six earned runs.

UW-Whitewater's Daniel Putnam went 5-for-5 with three runs scored on Friday, finishing the two-day series 8-for-9 with six runs scored. Coe was 2-for-2 with four RBIs in the win, while Matt Meisenheimer was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Meisenheimer had a three-run home run in the three-run fifth inning for the Warhawks.

Bear Notebook: Friday's game lasted three hours and 25 minutes, while the teams combined to have 42 student-athletes appear in the contest … UW-Whitewater has won the last three meetings between the two teams dating back to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
