Auburndale, Fla. – Sophomore D.J. Goldberg (Plainville, Mass.) and senior co-captain Andrew Janiga (Ellington, Conn.) turned in a pair of strong pitching performances, while sophomore Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) and junior Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) combined for nine hits as the Trinity College Bantams outmatched the Fontbonne University Griffins, 12-2 and 10-3, in a baseball doubleheader today at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. Trinity improves to 7-3 with their fourth straight win, while Fontbonne drops to 4-9 on the season.
Fontbonne took an early lead in Game 1, going up 1-0, as junior Mick Ritter (Grand Junction, Colo.) walked and scored in the top of the second. It did not take long for the Trinity bats to heat up, as they answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Goldberg, pitching with a 7-1 lead after three innings, would not give in, striking out the side in the fourth, before the offense would add six more runs in the ensuing three innings. Trinity junior David Cassanova (Bristol, Conn.) pitched the seventh to seal Trinity's first win of the day.
The Trinity offense picked up where they left off, posting four runs in the second inning of Game 2, giving Janiga all the offense he would need. Trinity led Fontbonne 4-3 in the fourth inning before Rogers opened the fifth with a double and a run to give Trinity some breathing room. Looking to put the game out of reach for the Griffins, the Trinity offense tacked on five more runs in the seventh, before Janiga closed the door in the bottom half of the inning, inducing a game-ending double play to earn the complete game.
Trinity outhit Fontbonne 30-9 in the games combined. Fontbonne junior Jordan Jereb (Peru, IL) pitched 5.2 innings for the Griffins and Trinity sophomore Joe Papa (Cambridge, Mass.) went deep in Game 2 for the Bantams.
