CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Aaron Schuldt (Liverpool) threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk as nationally 20th-ranked Cortland opened its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule with a 7-1 victory over The College at Brockport.

Cortland is now 9-5 with the victory while Brockport falls to 11-4. The teams will play a doubleheader at Cortland Tuesday at noon – a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest.

Schuldt allowed just one unearned run over his nine innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season. Kyle Smith (Sanborn/Niagara-Wheatfield) suffered the loss for Brockport and is 3-1 this spring. He gave up nine hits and six runs, three earned, in six and one-third innings. He fanned eight batters and walked two.

Freshman Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore Zack Graczyk (Carmel) went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Red Dragons. Sophomore John Adornetto (Commack) was 2-for-4 with a walk, junior Matt June (Colonie) finished 2-for-5 and freshman Adam Smith (Vestal) drove in two runs.

Senior Tom McCormick (Utica/Utica-Notre Dame) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to account for two of Brockport's three hits.

Brockport took the lead in the top of the second inning. Zach Prentice (Auburn) reached second on a throwing error and went to third on a groundout. After Jake Coleman (Hilton) was hit by a pitch, McCormick drove in the run with a bunt single. A groundout moved Coleman and McCormick to second and third, but they were stranded there after a groundout.

The Golden Eagles threatened again in the top of the third. Max Keado (Troy/Catholic Central) struck out to lead off the inning, but reached first on a wild pitch. A throwing error on a Mike Weakley (Liverpool) sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with no outs. Schuldt, however, got the next batter to ground into a third-to-second-to-first double play, with Keado holding at third, and a strikeout end the inning.

Cortland took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third. June led off with a single and went to third on a wild pickoff. Smith's grounder to first drove in June, with Smith reaching on the play due to an error. Smith stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Graczyk's sacrifice fly. Panetta singled in a run two batters later.

In the fourth, Matt Wild (Auburn) and June led off with singles, and they advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Smith then grounded out to short to drive in Wild, although June was thrown out at third on the play for an unconventional double play. The Red Dragons added three runs in the seventh. Adornetto hit a one-out double and scored on a Nick Thode (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) RBI single. Panetta singled in a run later in the inning and the final run scored on a wild pitch.

After McCormick singled with one out in the fourth, Schuldt recorded 14 straight outs before allowing a Max Zimmerman (East Amherst/Williamsville North) single to lead off the top of the ninth.
