Late Run Leads Becker Past RIC Baseball, 3-2

More news about: Rhode Island College

Leicester, MA-Sophomore second baseman Austin Phillips' (Thomson, GA) two-run, RBI single in the top of the eighth inning lifted Becker College to a 3-2 win over Rhode Island College in non-conference baseball action held on Thursday afternoon at frigid Rochdale Park.

The Hawks (10-5) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore catcher Todd Tompkins (West Haven, CT) drove in freshman infielder Cody Ewest (Warrenton, GA) from third with a single into center field.

The Anchormen (6-7) answered back in the top of the third inning when junior second baseman Joan Mustafa (Providence, RI) ripped a triple to deep center. The relay throw into third sailed out of play, allowing Mustafa to score the tying run.

Rhode Island College took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With junior third baseman J.P. Stone (Narragansett, RI) standing on second base, junior shortstop Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, MA) hit an RBI single to right field, putting the Anchormen in front, 2-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Hawks finally got to Rhode Island College sophomore starter David Hoey (Lincoln, RI). The inning culminated with the big hit from Phillips to put the Hawks on top to stay.

In the top of the ninth, Rhode Island College brought the tying run to the plate in the form of senior cleanup designated hitter Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI), but Becker junior reliever Jeff DiLorenzo (Coventry, RI) induced a five-four-three double play to end the game.

Freshman hurler Trenton Gibson (Henderson, NV) earned his first collegiate win (1-0) after pitching one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. DiLorenzo pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Hoey (1-3) took the loss for the Anchormen after pitching 7.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play at home against Keene State on Saturday, April 2 (noon).
