Coast Guard Snaps Mitchell's Winning Streak

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 16-5.

Cameron Carroll went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Bears (20-15 overall). Junior John Apostolo continued with a hot bat for the Mariners (17-6-1 overall) by going 2-for-4 with three RBI on the day.

Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a deep two-run homer to left field by Carroll, his first of the season. Mitchell tied the score in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Apostolo and a solo homer by junior Felix Colarte.

The Bears pulled ahead the fourth and never looked back. Tyler Babkiewich led off the frame with a homer off reliever Travis Gembecki, and Carroll later followed with a RBI single. Joe Petry capped the inning with a RBI single of his own to plate Graham Sherman and give Coast Guard a 5-2 lead.

Carroll stole home in the sixth inning to put another run on the board for the Bears. Coast Guard then scored seven runs in the eighth and added three more in the ninth to seal the victory. Reliever Riley Beecher tossed 2.0 shutout innings and didn't allow a hit to earn the win, evening his record at 3-3 on the season. Starter Nate Toll threw 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

Apostolo delivered a two-run triple in the ninth as the Mariners put three runs on the board. Senior Drew Rossi, who finished with a pair of doubles, was the only other Mitchell player with a pair of hits on the day.

Mitchell starter Jon Blair walked two and struck out two in 1.2 innings of work, allowing one run without giving up a hit. Gembecki (1-1 overall) took the loss for the Mariners, allowing three runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.

Mitchell returns to action at home against Lesley University on Friday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
