Thole Ties Single-Season Home Run Mark in 24th-Ranked Saints' Doubleheader Sweep of Thiel

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Junior first baseman Andrew Thole (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) tied Thomas More College's single-season home run record (14) to lead the 24th-ranked Thomas More baseball team to a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep of Thiel College today (Saturday, April 30, 2011) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 2-0, and the nightcap, 12-6.

With the sweep the Saints improve to 23-6 overall and 13-5 in the PAC, while the Tomcats fall to 17-18 overall and 7-11 in the PAC.

In game one, the Saints scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth, while junior pitcher Aaron Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) had a complete game shutout allowing seven hits and striking out six in seven innings.

At the plate, the Saints were led by sophomore center fielder Brandon Nutini (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic), who was two-for-three with a run batted-in and a run scored.

In the nightcap, the Tomcats jumped out to a 6-1 after three and a half innings and then the Saints rallied and scored three in the fourth, four in the fifth and four in the sixth for the 12-6 victory. 

Thole tied the home run record in the bottom of the fifth a go-ahead three-run blast to left field.

The Saints had three players with multiple hits in the game as senior third baseman Sam Schmeltzer (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) was three-for-four with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored, Thole was two-for-two with the home run, three RBI and three runs scored and freshman second baseman Tyler Graber (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) was two-for-two with a double and a RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Andrew Fritsch (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) earned the win as he pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief and didn't give up a hit or run and struck out two.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday (May 4) when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky for a 4 p.m. non-conference game with Transylvania University.
