UW-Oshkosh's starting pitchers totaled 15 strikeouts and just one walk as it opened the 2011 baseball season with a doubleheader split on Saturday (March 19) in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Titans (1-1) got only one base hit after the fourth inning to lose game one to Carthage College, 6-1. Phil Schreiber (Jr. • Kaukauna) helped his new team bounce back in the nightcap, striking out 10 batters to lead UW-Oshkosh in its 5-3 win over 16th-ranked The College of Wooster (5-4).

After a Tyler Kamps (So. • Appleton) double put UW-Oshkosh in front during the third inning, the Red Men (8-3) pitching staff hit its spots. While the Titans went scoreless, Carthage tallied on fourth-inning singles by Chris D'Angelo and Will Hodges.

The Red Men, who had singles for each of their 13 hits, marked once in the fifth frame on Mike Petti's base knock. D'Angelo and Hodges drove in one run apiece during the seventh inning to account for the final margin. Carthage was led by D'Angelo's three hits and two RBI.

Mitch Lochen (save) fanned six batters as he allowed one base runner in the last four frames. The win went to Mario Perez, who started and allowed one unearned run in five innings. Jeremy Rubens (Sr. • New Franken) tossed all eight frames and surrendered four ER in the loss.

UW-Oshkosh started aggressively against the Fighting Scots, posting an early 5-0 cushion. The Titans stole three bases in the first inning and tallied on a Kamps fly out. Schreiber allowed four hits during the first five frames, but he kept putting up zeros on the scoreboard.

A pair of errors helped the Titans cross the plate twice during the fourth. In the fifth inning, Kamps led off with a double. He scored on Sean Grabig's (So. • Howard) groundout to make it 4-0. Doug Beattie (So. • Escanaba, Mich.) added a sacrifice fly for his team's final production.

The College of Wooster rallied in the sixth to make the contest interesting. A triple from Greg Van Horn and a single by Johnathan Ray cut the deficit to 5-2. The Titans then committed two throwing errors to set up Michael Wellstead's RBI single during the seventh.

After Schreiber's 7.1 effective innings, Troy Mrkvicka (Jr. • Greendale) closed the door by getting five outs for the save. Mrkvicka allowed the trying run to reach second base, but he forced a fly out to end the game. The Titan defense turned three double plays in the contest.

The Fighting Scots utilized three pitchers, including loser Kyle Cunningham-Rhoa, who surrendered one run in three frames. Steve Hagen followed with two innings of work (four unearned runs) before Kyle Koski finished it with three shutout frames.

UW-Oshkosh matches up with The College of Wooster two more times on Sunday (March 20) in Port Charlotte, Fla.
