#4/7 CNU Pitches Past Randolph-Macon, 2-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport improved to 2-0 this season, winning a tight 2-1 decision over Randolph-Macon College (1-1) behind a strong pitching performance. The Captains allowed just two hits in the final five innings to pick up the win.

Junior right-hander Greg Goldsmith started for the Captains, giving up five hits in five innings while striking out six. Goldsmith gave up just one run in the but left the game with the score tied at one.

Reliever Richard Lindsay stepped in with a strong one-hit relief appearance to pick up the win. He struck out one and gave up just a single in two innings of work.

The Captains manufactured their two runs today, getting one in the fifth and one in the seventh. Rookie Andy Viands walked to lead off the fifth and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior center fielder Shannon Mark singled him in to tie the game.

Mark also factored into the game-winning run in the seventh, getting on with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a single by Billy Steel. A two-out error by the Randolph-Macon shortstop scored Mark from third on a ground ball.

Juniors Matt Verdillo and Ryan Fleischmann pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively, without giving up a baserunner to close out the win. Fleischmann picked up his first save of the season, giving him nine for his career, just three shy of the program record.

Mark finished up the day with a 2-for-3 performance including the RBI and run scored.

The Captains return to action this weekend as they take on #5 SUNY Cortland at 1:00 pm this Saturday, February 18. The team will then take on Bridgewater at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
