DEMOREST, Ga. -- Despite an impressive start from junior Greg Goldsmith, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (5-2) were upset for the second straight day. Adrian College (2-0), ranked #26 in the Collegiate Baseball News preseason poll, scored three runs in the eighth inning to take the win from CNU, 3-1.

Goldsmith gave up just four hits as he shutout the Bulldogs in seven innings of work, striking out a career-high nine in the start. No runner advanced past second base with Goldsmith on the hill.

Adrian starter, senior Jason Fryman, was just as good on the other side for the Bulldogs, allowing just two base runners in the first three innings.

The Captains finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, after sophomore Billy Steel led off the inning with a double, he advanced to third on a throwing error by the left fielder. The Adrian defense made a nice play at home to retire Steel on a fielders choice by Connor Madden, but a double from Matt shoemaker plated the game's first run.

Both teams were held scoreless for the next three innings, setting up the three-run eighth for Adrian. Junior reliever Ryan Fleischmanoff walk  came in for the Captains and gave up a lead-off walk, who would later score on a double by Mitch Stefanski. The swing tied the game but was just the first of three straight two-baggers that would score Stefanski and Michael Herzog for the 3-1 lead.

Matt Verdillo stepped in and struck out Jamey Sackett to end the inning, but the Captains were unable to get the runs back. Fryman pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, striking out seven and giving up just three hits to CNU. Steven Lindemuth joined Shoemaker and Steel as the only Captains to connect against Fryman.

Stefanski finished the day 2-4 with a run and RBI, while Herzog's pinch-hit double provided the eventual game-winner for Adrian.

CNU wastes no time getting back into action, as they return to Newport News for a home game on Tuesday, February 28 against Lynchburg College at 2:00 pm.
