HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Fourth-ranked Christopher Newport (6-2) scored five runs in the final two innings to get past Hampden-Sydney College (4-7) today, winning 6-1 over the Tigers. The Captains held H-SC to seven hits and just one run as the team bounced back after a pair of losses.
Sophomore Nick Santalucia got the start, and faced just four batters over the minimum in five innings of work. He struck out three and allowed one run on five hits, leaving the game in a 1-1 deadlock.
The Captains offense was held at bay, getting just one run in the top of the first until the eighth inning. Luke Brunot, Dalton Renick and Kyle McKay combined to pitch the first seven innings against the potent Captains offense, allowing just three hits and striking out four.
After junior reliever Richard Lindsay retired the side in the bottom of the seventh, though, the Captains offense woke up. Senior Connor Madden opened the inning with a walk and was replaced at first base by Matt Shoemaker after a fielders choice. Steven Lindemuth scorched a double to the wall, scoring Shoemaker, but was tossed out at third on the relay, setting up a two-out at-bat by Luke Saunders. The senior third baseman stepped in and slammed a solo shot over the wall to give the Captains a two-run lead, 3-1.
Matt Verdillo followed Lindsay's lead in the eighth inning, getting a 1-2-3 inning out of the Tigers and putting the Captains at the plate in the ninth inning. Ben Lenda led off with a double and an HBP followed by a walk loaded the bases. With two outs, a crucial error by the left fielder scored all three runs as Shoemaker cleared the bases with a hard shot to left.
CNU closer Ryan Fleischmann came in and closed out the win with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth, helping the Captains improve to 6-2 on the season. Lindsay picked up his second win on the year, improving to 2-0.
Offensively, senior Shannon Mark led the way with a 2-3 day including a double and two runs scored. Saunders homer was the lone long-ball in the game, while Lindemuth and Lenda each tacked on a double.
Jeff Gray and Hunter Lewis were each 2-4 for the Tigers, and Lewis had a double with the only run scored for H-SC.
The game kicks off a stretch of 10 games over the next 12 days, including three home games this weekend. CNU will take on Gallaudet University on Friday, March 2 at 1:00 pm.
