UNION, N.J. (February 22, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team opened up its season on the road at nationally ranked No. 3 Kean University on February 22. Stevens fell to the Cougars, 7-3, at Jim Hynes '63 Baseball Stadium. It was also Kean's 2012 season opener.
Although the Ducks lost by four runs, they did hold a 2-0 lead after the top of the second inning, only to watch it evaporate with a run in bottom half of the second and third innings, respectively, and two more in the fourth. Kean would put another run across the plate in the sixth before Stevens answered back with one of its own in the seventh. The Cougars would put the game away in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs.
Stevens was led at the plate by sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) who went 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Also tallying two hits on the afternoon was first baseman Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.). Glassman batted 2-for-5 with a double.
All 10 hits for the Ducks came from the one-through-eight batters in the lineup. Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) scored a run as part of a 1-for-5 day, and designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) and infielder Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) both went 1-for-4 with a run scored in the game. Senior outfielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.J.) walked as part of a 1-for-3 afternoon.
On the mound, junior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) suffered the loss in four innings of action. Poinsett gave up six hits and four runs (three earned) and walked two. Sophomore transfer Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, N.J.) appeared in relief for four innings and allowed three hits on three runs and three walks.
Stevens will be back on the diamond on Sunday, February 29, for a doubleheader against Yeshiva University at the DeBaun Athletic Complex and Dobbelaar Baseball Field. The first game is slated to start at 12 p.m.
