FOREST GROVE – Chad Fahey (Sr., Keizer, Ore.) threw a complete-game shutout Sunday, giving Pacific their second series victory over George Fox in as many years with a 3-0 win over the Bruins in Northwest Conference baseball action Sunday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Fahey allowed just six hits and one walk while striking out six and allowed just one runner past second base as he led the Boxers through what was at times a wet, blustery game. He improved to 2-1 on the season. Fahey succeeded in outlasting George Fox hurler Tom Zarozinski, who allowed three runs, two earned, on just six hits in 6.1 innings to take the loss for the Bruins.
Fahey was the beneficiary of strong Pacific defense that turned four doubles plays in the contest, including a twin-killing on Nick Benish's ground ball to shortstop in the bottom of the ninth to close the game out.
The start of the game was delayed three hours due to the wet and windy weather. The whole series had been moved to Forest Grove from George Fox's Morse Field because of wet and unplayable field conditions. George Fox played as the home team in all three games.
Pacific took advantage as they took a series from the Bruins for the second time in as many years and have now won six of their last seven meetings. The victory moved Pacific into sole possession of third place in the NWC at 4-2 and 7-9 overall. George Fox fell to 7-11 overall, 3-3 NWC.
The Boxers cobbled out nine hits against three George Fox pitchers and left nine runners on base, but once again came through with clutch situational hitting. Logan Moen (Jr., Brier, Wash.) accounted for the winning run in the fourth when he reached on an error that allowed him to advance all of the way to third base, with Nate Rasmussen (Sr., Sandy, Utah) scoring him on a single up the middle.
Pacific pounded out four hits in the seventh to score a pair of insurance runs. Kevin Schwartz (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.) singled to right field with one out and then scored on Nick Tasaka's (Jr., Hawaii Kai, Hawaii) double to right center field. Jared Van Hoon (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) followed with a single to left that brought home Tasaka from second.
Tasaka went 3 for 5 to lead Pacific at the plate while six different players had hits for George Fox.
After six straight games on their home field, Pacific will take to the road on Tuesday for a non-conference contest at Corban. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Boxers will then start another six-game home stand next weekend when they host Lewis & Clark for a three-game NWC series. George Fox continues their long season-beginning road trip next weekend with a three-game set at Willamette.
