FORT MYERS, Fla. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (11-6) closed out action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a pair of wins Tuesday, as the Hawks swept Plymouth State University (6-4) in a non-conference doubleheader. New Paltz won game one, 6-2, before capturing game two, 3-2. Both contests were seven innings in duration.

In game one, sophomore James McKenna (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) threw a complete game and earned the win, tossing seven innings while permitting two runs off eight hits and two walks. He also struck out six.

The front end of the twinbill featured three Hawks with multi-hit performances. Sophomore Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) batted 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base, junior Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and junior Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) batted 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The nightcap came down to the wire, as New Paltz showed mettle in the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh and with the Hawks up, 2-1, Carr singled before stealing second. He was forced to stay put with a fly out to right field but ended up 90 feet away from home off another stolen base. After the second out was recorded, Carr came home on a passed ball and gave the Hawks a two-run cushion.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Plymouth State's first batter grounded out to the shortstop, and the second batter flied out to center field. The Panthers, however, drew a walk and hit an RBI double to pull back within one. Sophomore Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) ended up striking out the final batter to preserve the victory.

Grann, the winning pitcher, worked a full seven innings on the hill, yielding two runs off seven hits and three walks while striking out four.

Game two's offensive production came largely from Carr, who went 4-for-5 with four stolen bases and two runs scored. Junior Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) drove in two runs, while sophomore Doug Marshall (Wantagh, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) went 1-for-3 with a double and Repetto batted 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

New Paltz kicks off State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, March 23, as it finds itself opposite SUNY Plattsburgh. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
