WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 10/17 Shenandoah University split its non-league baseball 'Battle of the Hornets' with Lynchburg College Wednesday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.

Shenandoah (17-6) was a 3-0 winner in the opener before Lynchburg (15-6) rebounded for a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

Junior Nicholas McMahon tossed a one-hitter for SU in the opening game, allowing only a Michael Kenah single to left with one out in the top of the first.

Classmate Joey Donofrio provided McMahon with all of the offense he would need by leading off the Shenandoah first with a double to right and scoring on a Jake Pendergraft groundout to second.

Pendergraft plated the hosts next run, on a fielder's choice in the third, before Cory Nelson closed the book on the game one scoring with a solo HR in the fourth.

McMahon faced just one batter over the minimum as Shenandoah, which leads the nation in double plays, turned in three twin killings against its future ODAC rivals.

McMahon (3-0) struck out five, walked one and hit one batter.

The double plays came in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

LC scored one run in each of the first three innings of game two to salvage the split.

Reliever Brandon Miller (5-0), Lynchburg's winningest pitcher, scattered three hits and struck out five over the final 5.0 innings to earn the victory.

Shenandoah scored its lone game two run on a Corbin Lucas RBI single to center in the bottom of the second.

SU is back in action this weekend at Methodist.
