Sophomore pitcher Kyle Neu (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded his first career shutout victory to help the Centre College baseball team defeat Rhodes College 3-0 in the series finale Sunday, March 25 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 11-13 overall and 1-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while Rhodes falls to 14-9 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Centre broke through in the third. Following a ground out to start the inning, junior shortstop Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) singled and stole second. A strikeout brought sophomore outfielder Sean Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) up with two outs. Cole reached on an error and then sophomore outfielder Cody Nelson (Joelton, Tenn.) followed with a single to score Ammann for a 1-0 Centre lead.
The Colonels extended the lead in the fourth. Junior outfielder Jason Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) hit a one-out triple down the right field line. Freshman first baseman Pete Eddings (Louisville, Ky.) was then hit by a pitch. Senior second baseman Jacob Plummer (Cattlestburg, Ky.) scored Osterman on a bunt hit to make it 2-0.
A ground out moved the runners to second and third and junior Danny Freudiger (Cincinnati, Ohio) singled to score Eddings, but Plummer was thrown out trying to score to end the inning with the Colonels ahead 3-0.
Neu and the Centre defense did the rest. The sophomore hurler did not allow a runner to reach third and allowed only one runner to reach second. He allowed four hits, including three infield hits, over nine innings with no walks and five strikeouts to improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Colonels had eight hits on the day by eight different players.
Centre will next host Transylvania University Wednesday, March 28 in a non-conference match-up. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. in Danville.
