DEFIANCE, Ohio – Stephen Leskow took a perfect game into the fifth inning and combined with Brett Belew and Alex Schomaeker to hold Rose-Hulman without an earned run, but the Engineers scraped across three unearned tallies and completed the series sweep with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Rutter Field.
Leskow did not allow a base runner until one out in the fifth and did not see a Rose-Hulman player reach scoring position until the Engineers opened the sixth with back-to-back singles. Both runners would eventually come around to score, as a costly error on Defiance opened the door to a pair of unearned runs and a 2-1 lead for the Engineers. It would stay that way until the ninth, when Rose-Hulman capitalized on another blunder from the Jackets to push the spread to its final mark of 3-1.
Leskow ended with seven innings of work on the mound, with no earned runs and only three hits allowed. The Defiance, Ohio native did not yield a walk and retired four Rose-Hulman (12-4, 3-0 HCAC) batters on strikes.
Defiance could not take advantage of the strong start from Leskow however, managing only five hits on the afternoon. Brad Kremer picked up one of those hits and scored DC's only run, while Darin Waterman singled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Jackets (6-9, 0-3 HCAC) will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday, when they play at Albion (4-7) in a non-conference game starting at 4:00 pm.
