Worcester, MA --- Mitch McClune (Pembroke, MA) belted out three hits to help WPI extend its winning streak to a season-best five games with 5-2 victory over NEWMAC rival Clark on Wednesday afternoon.  The Engineers run their record to 16-8 this spring and 5-3 in conference action while Clark slips to 6-16 overall and 2-6 in NEWMAC play.

Clark, playing as the visitors on its home field, opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Michael Lamothe (Bellingham, MA) singled, was sacrificed to second by Dennis Glynn (Jamaica Plain, MA), moved to third on an infield single from Matthew Bohl (Amherst, MA) and scored on wild pitch.

WPI evened the score in the bottom of the second when Kyle Bartosik (Midland Park, NJ) knocked in Tim Erlandson (Hudson, MA) with an RBI ground out.  The Crimson and Gray took the lead for good an inning later on an run-producing triple off the bat of Nick Bean(Middleboro, MA) and a RBI double by John Flynn (Albion, ME) both of which came on 0-2 pitches.

The Engineers pushed the advantage to 4-1 in the fourth when Sam Miraglia (West Babylon, NY) chased home McClune with a single to center.  Clark sliced the lead a frame with an unearned run on a RBI grounder from Glynn only to see WPI counter with the final run in the contest with a Bartosik run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2.

Clark had one final chance when with two outs in the ninth, three batters reached to load the bases but freshman reliever Taylor Landry (Kennebunk, ME) squashed the rally by inducing a fly out to end the game.

David Trujillo (Sutton, MA) leveled his record at 2-2 by going the first 6 2/3 for WPI.  The lefty scattered five yields and only allowed one earned run.  Landry tossed the final 2 2/3 innings en route to registering his team-best third save.

Andrew LeBlanc (Farmington, CT) evened his mark at 3-3.  The Clark right hander went six innings, yielding eight hits and five runs (four earned) and striking out four.  David Balme(Brooklyn, NY) notched two scoreless innings of relief for the Cougars.

Joining McClune with multiple hits on the day were Flynn of WPI and Michael Lamothe, Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, MA) and Jeremy Gerber (Amherst, MA) of Clark.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Tuesday at 3:30pm at Clark.  In the meantime, WPI opens a three-game weekend set versus Coast Guard at 3:30pm at Assumption on Friday while Clark does the same versus Babson on the road at 3:30pm.
