NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College baseball team let an 8-2 lead in the fifth inning get away from them as they lost to Thomas More 10-9 in extra innings. The Titans dropped to 19-9 overall and 10-2 in the PAC, while the Saints improved to 18-10 overall and 8-7 in the league.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Westminster pulled ahead 2-1 after a two-run RBI off the bat of PAC Hitter of the Week senior Tim Wiand (Pottstown, PA / Owen J. Roberts). Thomas More, however, responded in the following inning with an RBI single to tie it 2-2.
Freshman Nick Reinthaler (Canfield, OH / Canfield) put the Titans in the lead again with a two-out RBI double in the fourth inning. Senior Ethan Yeager (Pottstown, PA / Owen J. Roberts) scored on the play, giving the Titans a 3-2 lead. Westminster had its most productive inning in the fifth as they capitalized on two Saints' errors and scored five runs in total. Juniors Kyle Allen (New Wilmington, PA / West Middlesex) and Chris Ross (West Pittsburg, PA / New Castle) each had an RBI in the inning.
Thomas More did not give up and scored two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to take a 9-8 lead.
Down 9-8 in the 9th inning, senior Steve Perrotta (New Castle, PA / New Castle) led off with a double to center field. One batter later, Allen singled to advance Perrotta to third. Perrotta would then score after Thomas More's left fielder bobbled the ball. With two runners on and only one out, Westminster was unable to earn the game-winning run which forced the game into extra innings.
The Saints did not waste any time to score in extras as they would score in the 10th to take a 10-9 lead. The Titans had an opportunity with runners on the corners with two outs in their final at bat, but were unable to score any runs.
Junior Scott Hanicak (Ellwood City, PA / Laurel) got the loss and is now 2-1 on the season. Hanicak pitched one inning and gave up one run (unearned) off one hit. He struck out none and walked one.
Thomas More's hurler Mike Hager picked up his third win on the season and now stands at 3-1. He also pitched just one inning and gave up one hit. Hager struck out one and walked the same.
Westminster will take just one day off before they are back on the diamond. The Titans will host Saint Vincent on Tuesday in a PAC doubleheader. Game one will start at 2 p.m.
