POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 15, 2012) – A 16-hit onslaught led the Vassar College baseball team over Union College 15-3 in game one of a Liberty League doubleheader, but in the second game, the Brewers were unable to match Union's offensive performance falling 11-7.
Vassar found its swing with 14 runs across the first five innings en route to a 15-3 win in game one. In game two, Union scored five runs in third inning and withstood a ferocious Vassar rally for an 11-7 win.
The Brewers (9-16, 7-9) are currently tied for fifth place in the Liberty League and next host Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday, April 18, at 4:00 at Prentiss Baseball Field. The Dutchmen (13-12, 8-8) host Southern Vermont College on Tuesday, April 17.
In the first game, Vassar caught fire with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, fueled by back-to-back bombs by Mike Perrone and Brett Zaziski. Liam Lee started the inning with a single to center and Perrone followed with a homer to left to put Vassar ahead 2-0. Zaziski turned on an inside pitch for a solo jack to right center and a 3-0 lead. Vassar added one more run with back-to-back doubles by Jason Garfinkel and Parker Werline to take a 4-0 lead.
The Brewers took an 11-2 lead with four runs in the fifth with RBIs on two sacrifice flies, a hit by pitch, and a single by Perrone. Zaziski batted 3-for-4 with three runs, one RBI, one homerun, one triple, and one single. John MacGregor allowed three runs on seven hits to earn the complete game win.
In the second game, Vassar struck first when Lee led off with a first pitch triple and scored when Perrone laced a single to left on the next pitch. Union responded with a run in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
With Union leading 10-2 entering the bottom of the seventh the Brewers plated one in the seventh, when Right fielder Sean Morash led off with a double, moved to third on a single by catcher A.J. Kim and scored when left fielder Dan McCormack grounded into a double play.
Vassar rallied to score four more runs in the eighth. Zaziski reached on a fielding error with one out and came around to score on a double by second baseman Dave Robbins. Two batters later, Werline singled to score Robbins, followed by singles from Morash and Kim that scored another runner. McCormack generated the fourth run of the inning when he reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Morash to score Vassar's seventh run of the game.
Seth Roberts earned the win for Union, improving to 3-1 on the season. He surrendered three runs over six and two thirds innings.
