CHICAGO, Ill. – The Edgewood College baseball team piled up the hits early, but they didn't translate into runs in a 7-1 loss to NCAA Division I member Illinois-Chicago. The Eagles had two hits in each of the first four innings, but stranded 14 runners against the Flames. The non-conference setback snaps the Eagles four-game winning streak.
Edgewood College (13-18) advanced a runner to third base in the first four innings, but only pushed across one run in the third. Zach Creekmore led off with a base on balls and moved to third on Alex Jaskulski's double into left field. One batter later, Jake Zadra brought home Creekmore with a well-placed bunt single.
Starting pitcher Brad Clark held up well against the Flames, avoiding any big innings. Clark lasted seven innings, struck out one hitter and didn't walk a batter. Marc Ostrowski came on to pitch the eighth inning to close the game.
Eight of the nine batters in the Eagles' lineup had a hit, led by Jake Thome who went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice and a stolen base. Zadra and Mike Selvaggi both went 2-for-5. Ryan Walker singled in the first inning to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 23 straight games. He is three games short of the school record of 26 shared by Shawn Burcum and Travis Krahn.
Edgewood College will play two of the Northern Athletics Conference's top teams in the standings this weekend. The Eagles will travel to Concordia University Chicago on Saturday and return home for a Senior Day doubleheader with Rockford College at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
