GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg scored all eight of its runs over its last three innings and the Bullets won their fourth game in a row, defeating Lebanon Valley College 8-4 in a non-conference tilt Thursday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
Gettysburg (23-11) has now won nine of its last 10 games heading into its Centennial Conference regular season finale this Saturday.
Sophomore Joe Saladino earned his first collegiate victory for Gettysburg, throwing 6 1/3 innings and holding the Flying Dutchmen to two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Classmate Rob Stalzer worked out of a jam in the seventh closed out the win for his second save in three days.
Gettysburg outhit Lebanon Valley 14-10, and all nine Bullet starters hit safely. Sophomore Austin Davis, sophomore Al Posch, senior Clint O'Brien, junior Pat Cody, and freshman Cory Karagjozi all collected two hits apiece while O'Brien and sophomore Cam MacDonald each scored a pair of runs. Cody, Simon, and Karagjozi had two RBIs apiece.
MacDonald also threw out both of LVC's would-be base stealers.
Ryan Schwartz went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Dutchmen (24-16), who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end, while Derek Brousseau tossed six innings in a losing effort.
Saladino (1-1) faced the minimum through the first three innings, getting a double play in the first before MacDonald threw out his first runner in the third. But Lebanon Valley scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to assume an early 2-0 lead.
The Bullets finally got to Brousseau (4-3) in the sixth, scoring three times on four hits. Davis got things started with a hard-hit ball back through the box that eluded the grasp of Brousseau. After Davis moved up on a wild pitch, O'Brien smoked a single to left that was hit too hard to score the runner from second.
Cody followed up with a single through the left side, and two batters later Karagjozi gave the Bullets the lead for good with a two-run single to left, making it 3-2.
The Dutchmen threatened in the seventh, getting back-to-back singles leading off the inning before a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. But that's when Stalzer came on to put out the fire. He struck out the team's No. 9 hitter looking, then put Schwartz on with an intentional walk after falling behind 3-0. But he coaxed Brousseau into a flyout to end the inning.
Gettysburg broke it open with a four-run, six-hit seventh in which 10 batters came to the plate against reliever Corey Cinicola. Posch and O'Brien each had RBI-singles before Simon drove in a pair with a single of his own to cap the big inning and put the Bullets up 7-2.
Lebanon Valley made it 7-4 with a pair of runs on two hits in the eighth, which was elongated by a strike-three passed ball that would have resulted in the first out but scored the second run.
Cody drove in the game's final run with a single in the eighth. He now has 39 RBIs for the season – third in school history.
Stalzer allowed a leadoff single in the ninth but retired the final three batters. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out three.
