Oswego State's Playoff Hopes Shrink in 13-2 Loss at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Fredonia (12-20, 6-10 SUNYAC) put together four multi-run innings and held Oswego State (17-20, 6-10) to seven hits as it grabbed the first game of a three-game weekend series, 13-2. The Lakers have a chance to reach the SUNYAC playoffs if they can sweep the final doubleheader tomorrow and Oneonta loses two games at Brockport. A split on Saturday would leave the Lakers on the outside of the SUNYAC playoffs.

Friday's contest was scoreless for two and a half innings, but Fredonia scored four runs on five singles and a two-out error that allowed the final run of the inning to score in the bottom of the third.

The Blue Devils pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with a pair of runs, one of which was unearned.

Oswego State looked to rally in the sixth inning after Scott Buniak (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) singled and David Mazzullo (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) walked with one out. However, Buniak was thrown out at the plate on the next play. The Lakers did pick up one run thanks to a RBI single by Alex Jurzcynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.).

Fredonia put the game out of reach in the bottom of the six, though. The Blue Devils scored five runs thanks to six hits and two more Laker errors.

Eric Scorzafava (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.) walked and scored on a sacrfice fly by Mike Stark (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) in the seventh inning, but the Lakers were held hitless the rest of the way.

Jurzcynski finished with two of the Laker hits to pace the offense, while Jon Stevens (Jr., Chittenago, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in three innings.

First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader at Fredonia is scheduled for 12 p.m.
