Paige Blast Leads Lynchburg to 6-1 Victory over Piedmont

DEMOREST, GA – Senior Ashton Paige connected for a leadoff homerun, leading Lynchburg to a 6-1 victory over the host school, Piedmont College, in the Piedmont College Tournament Saturday night.

Paige did not wait long to get the Hornets on the board, belting a Chris Goershel pitch for his second career homer and an early 1-0 lead. Lynchburg would go on to plate a run in five of the first six innings off Goershel.

The Hornets started the second with back-to-back singles from junior Jake Tanner and sophomore Joe Rogers. Following a fielding error that allowed the runners to advance, Tanner crossed home on a fielder's choice groundout by Paige.

More errors helped the Hornets in the third and fourth innings. Senior Dan Savage singled before circling the bases on a passed ball and two errors to give Lynchburg a 3-0 lead in the third.

Sophomore Lincoln Evans scored the fourth run of the game, leading off the fourth by way of a three-base error. Paige lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to add to his RBI total and pad the Hornet lead.

Lynchburg would add a run in the sixth on an RBI single by senior Michael Kenah and one in the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice by junior Dustin Arrowood.

Lynchburg sophomore Martin Henderlite (1-0) got his second start of the 2013 season on the mound, twirling six shutout innings without allowing a run. He scattered two hits and three walks while striking out seven Lions.

Paige led the way for the Hornets (2-2) with a 2-for-4 day with his solo homerun, three RBI, and a run scored. Evans went 2-for-4 while making four putouts from his left field position. Kenah, Savage, and Tanner all went 2-for-5 with Kenah stealing his second bag of the season.

Logan Pethel led Piedmont (3-4), going 2-for-4 at the dish. The pitching duo of Goershel and Allen Tokarz combined to give up just two earned runs.

Lynchburg concludes its games in the Piedmont College Tournament on Sunday as the Hornets play Millsaps College (3-2) at noon.
