DOVER, Del. – With a 6-5 extra-inning victory in the opener of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with Frostburg State, the Wesley College baseball team took the series with the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at Bob Reed Field. The Wolverines (10-3, 2-1 CAC) dropped game two, 6-3 in nine innings to Frostburg (10-6, 1-2 CAC).

Wesley rallied back from a four-run deficit in the opener to earn the series win.  The Wolverines cut the lead in half using single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBIs by Corey Jefferson and Cory Smith.  After Frostburg extended its lead to 5-2 with a run in the sixth, Adam Darling drove in two runs with a double and later scored on Trevor Mears' single to center field to tie the score.

Relievers Andrew Cooper and Rich Lober held the Bobcats scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings in place of starter Zach Stuart, allowing Wesley to possibly earn a walk-off victory. 

Darling reached to start the inning on a wild pitch and a perfect bunt down the first base line put two runners on for the Wolverines with no outs.  Jon Carlson laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position and Smith was intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up a force at every base. Rupp grounded the ball to short but was able to beat out a possible double play ball allowing Darling to score the winning run.

Lober received the victory by allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings while Cooper went the same distance.  Getting the no-decision in the start was Stuart, who allowed five runs in 5.1 innings.

Mears led the team with three hits while Jefferson and Steve Perone collected two hits apiece.

Game two was nearly the complete opposite from the opener as Wesley held a 2-0 lead going into the seventh as Rupp and Sam Farnell collected RBIs in the sixth.  FSU rallied for three runs in the seventh off starting pitcher Eric Willey, who took the no-decision, and Lober.

The Wolverines quickly regrouped and managed to score a run on a sacrifice fly by Mears to send the game into extras once again.

Scott Dougherty pitched a scoreless eighth by allowed three runs in the ninth as the Bobcats took a 6-3 lead. Wesley was unable to answer but still managed to take two games in its CAC-opening series.

In the no-decision, Willey allowed just two earned runs while striking out five in 6.1 innings of work.

Wesley will host Penn St.-Harrisburg on Wednesday, March 20, in a 4 pm doubleheader at Schutte Park in Dover, Del.
