Hamline sweeps Dubuque

More news about: Hamline

The way things went, Hamline's baseball team probably wishes they could play more games in the Metrodome.

The Pipers pitched well and hit in the clutch in a 2-1, 8-1 sweep of Dubuque in their last scheduled games ever to be played in downtown Minneapolis.

HU improved to 7-3 overall with the sweep. In the first game, they rallied from an early 1-0 hole to scrape together two two out fourth inning runs on three singles and a throwing error. Four Piper pitchers -- Zach Brautigam, Andy Weiss, Casey Benford and Rannon Arch held the Spartans to five hits. Weiss, the second pitcher to work, earned the win.

Thanks in great part to Dan Ellefson (pictured facing camera in Hamline jersey),  Game 2 went more smoothly. The senior had a big day at the plate and on the mound. At the bat, he whacked a pair of doubles and drove in four runs. He got able assistance from Jordan Rubbelke (2 hits, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases, RBI) and Mark Radmacher (2 hits, RBI) and Dan Moro (2 runs, a sacrifice and on base three times). Moro also had a key single in the winning rally in the lidlifter.

Hamline knocked out 10 hits to back Ellefson, who gave up just six hits and an unearned run in six innings of mound work. the senior walked none and fanned six in an efficient 75 pitches work.

The Pipers now head west for six games in Tucson, Arizona. First up: a doubleheader with UW-Lacrosse on March 23. UW-L already has win over MIAC foes St. Thomas and Augsburg.
