Thomas More Sweeps PAC Doubleheader With Saint Vincent

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team swept Saint Vincent College today (Saturday, April 27, 2013) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won game one, 9-6, and the nightcap, 5-2.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 24-11 overall and 14-6 in the PAC and the Bearcats fall to 15-15 overall and 11-7 in the PAC.

In the first game, Saint Vincent took an early 3-0 with three runs in the second, but the Saints scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and take a 4-3 lead. After took a 6-4 lead with three runs in the fourth, Thomas More scored four in the fifth and one in the sixth to rally for the 9-6 victory.

At the plate, senior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) led the team at the plate as he was two-for-two with two runs batted-in and a run scored. Junior center fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a RBI and two runs scored, sophomore first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored and senior right fielder Ryan Darner (Burlington, Ky./Covington Catholic) was one-for-three with a two-run home run and two runs scored.

On the mound, senior Paul Uhl (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) had a no-decision as he pitched three and a third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits and struck out three. Junior Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) pitched one and a third innings of relief and gave up one run (earned) on three hits. Etscheid earned the win as he pitched two and a third scoreless innings and gave up two hits and struck out four.

In the nightcap, the Saints took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, but Saint Vincent tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the third and a run in the fourth. Thomas More then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth for the 5-2 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) earned the win on the mound as he pitched all seven innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits and struck out two.

Four Saints had multiple hits in the game as Etscheid was two-for-two with a double and a RBI, senior short stop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) was two-for-three with a RBI and a run scored, Darner was two-for-three with a double, a RBI and a runs scored and junior left fielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with two runs scored.

The two teams will close out the three-game PAC series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game at the Thomas More Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the Saints will honor their eight seniors prior to the game.
