ADRIAN, Mich. - The postseason experience for the Adrian College baseball team came to the forefront on Wednesday afternoon as the Bulldogs came back from down 4-1 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-4 win over Trine in the opening game of the 2013 MIAA Tournament. Adrian had just five hits and one run through seven innings and then got to work.
Dan Heatherly singled up the middle and Sam Fischer doubled down the left field line and then took third on a fielding error by Tom Wilder. Heatherly scored on the play to cut the deficit to 4-2. After one out was recorded, Trine starter Jake Rightnowar was pulled for closer Nick Cocanower. Cocanower making his 26th appearance of the season, gave up a single to Jamey Sackett on a 1-2 pitch to score Fischer and make it 4-3. Sackett took second on a passed ball and with two outs Adrian got their final two runs. Zach Kolvey drew a pinch-hit walk on an eight-pitch at-bat and Cody Meyer pinch ran for him. Garrett Green hit a chopper to third for an infield hit and Andrew DeGood got up and tried to throw Green out but the ball got away and Sackett scored the tying run. Green stole second and Andrew DeLuca drew a walk to load the bases. Anthony Sergi was plucked on the arm with a 1-0 pitch to push across the winning run.
Rylie Robinson went the first eight frames on the mound and threw four scoreless innings to end his outing. Lucas Willitzer entered in the ninth and retired the Thunder in order for his fourth save of the season. Robinson got the win (6-1) allowing six hits, three earned runs, a walk with five strikeouts. Cocanower took the loss (1-2) allowing two unearned runs in 2/3 innings.
Sackett went 3-for-4 to lead the Adrian offense. Fischer hit doubles number 11 and 12 on the season in four at-bats. Heatherly also had a pair of hits in five at-bats. Adrian (29-12) will now play the winner of Hope/Calvin on Thursday at 10 a.m. from Boeve Stadium on the campus of Hope College in Holland, Mich.
