Saints Defeat Saint Vincent 8-5, to Advance to PAC Championship Games

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The third-seeded Thomas More College baseball team defeated fourth-seeded Saint Vincent College, 8-5, today (Saturday, May 11, 2013) in the loser's bracket finals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at Ross Memorial Park.

With the win, the Saints improve to 29-13 and advance to play top-seeded Washington & Jefferson today at 3 p.m. in the first game of the championship series. The Saints must beat the Presidents' twice to win the championship. With the loss, the Bearcats end the season at 19-20.

Thomas More scored three runs in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh and held Saint Vincent to three runs in the first, one in the third and one in the sixth for the 8-5 victory.

The Saints were led at the plate by junior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry), who was two-for-four with a home run, three runs batted-in and a run scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior left fielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-five with a double and two RBI, sophomore catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) was two-for-three with a run scored and sophomore first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-five.

On the mound, senior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) started and had a no-decision as he pitched three innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out two. Sophomore pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) earned the win as he pitched six innings of relief and gave up one run (unearned) on five hits.
