Oxy Baseball Wins One, Loses One at CMS

CLAREMONT — The Occidental baseball team split its doubleheader at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday.

The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, but were rained out.

The Tigers and the Stags will likely finish their three-game series at Oxy on Monday or Tuesday depending on field conditions.

 

Game 1: Occidental 5, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2

Joseph Kling had another solid start, going six innings without an earned run, and the Oxy offense came through when it needed too.

Kling struck out five batters on his way to his first victory of the season.

Will Nahmens followed Kling with two solid innings in relief, before handing the ball to Scott Ericksen, who earned the save in the ninth.

Chris CaldwellRiley Smith and Victor Munoz all had two hits.

The Tigers scored their first two runs in the top of the second. A.J. Libunao singled in Smith and thenAlec Strain hit an RBI-double to left center, scoring Walker Marks.

Johnathan Brooks crossed the plate on an error in the third, Jonathan Wong doubled in A. Strain in the sixth and Chris Caldwell drove in Munoz with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.   

 

Game 2: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8, Occidental 4

Brooks hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth, but the Tigers were already down four runs and CMS added four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Brooks belted his first homer of the season to right field, scoring Wong and Chris Strain.

Brooks finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate, with a double, a homer and three RBIs.

Mitch Margolis was charged with the loss, but threw six solid innings with just two runs against him.

Clayton Brock earned the win for CMS.
