Rams Open 2014 with Win Over Merchant Marine

Yaphank, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team earned a 6-1 victory over Merchant Marine in their first game of the 2014 season at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, N.Y.

In the top of the second inning, sophomore first baseman Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.) led off with a single to right and advanced to second base on a fielding error off a Daniel Paccione (Commack, N.Y.) fielder's choice. Senior centerfielder Edward Bergmann (East Meadow, N.Y.) put the Rams ahead 2-0 with a 2 RBI single to shortstop.

Farmingdale State increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI single to left by freshman second baseman Andrew Karkota (Manorville, N.Y.). Karkota later scored an unearned run to put the Rams on top 4-0.

After Merchant Marine (2-1) cut the deficit to 4-1, Farmingdale State added two in the eighth inning en route to the 6-1 season opening victory.

Bergmann was 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI, while Karkota had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. McCarthy was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored for the Rams.

Senior pitcher Michael Dolce (St. James, N.Y.) threw four scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out four. Sophomore Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway, N.Y.) earned the win after allowing one run in three innings of relief.

Farmingdale State next will host Brockport State on Saturday, March 8th at noon and Eastern Connecticut at 4:00 p.m.
