Keystone Breaks Into Win Column With Doubleheader Sweep of Arcadia

More news about: Keystone

Fort Pierce, FL – Keystone College broke into the win column on Saturday afternoon by sweeping Arcadia University in a doubleheader during the Giants' annual spring break trip to Florida.  The Giants won Saturday's opening game 8-5 before claiming a 4-0 shutout in the nightcap to improve to 2-4 on the young season.  The Knights remain winless in three games after Saturday's twin bill.

After conceding a run in the top half of the first inning of Saturday's opening game, Keystone scored four runs in the home half of the frame to hold a 4-1 lead after the first.  Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) got the Giants' scoring started with a double that brought home Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) before scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Dan Denton (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North).  Denton scored Keystone's third run on a Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) base hit and Bzozowski scored later in the inning on an error.

The Knights used a four-run second inning to go up 5-4, scoring four runs on four hits, but it would be the last runs they would score.  The Giants tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth when McLaughlin brought home Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) with a base knock.  Keystone then took an 8-5 lead with three runs in the home sixth, with Riscica collecting a two-run single that plate Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) and Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) before Reyes scored on a sacrifice fly by Denton.

Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first save of the season and preserve the win for Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) (1-0), who struck out one while allowing one walk in a scoreless sixth inning.  Giants' starter Mike Pembleton (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) took a no-decision after allowing five runs – four earned – one five hits and three walks while striking out two in five innings of work.

Riscica and McLaughlin had two hits and two RBIs apiece while Denton also drove in a pair of runs to lead the Giants' offense in Saturday's first game.

In Saturday's nightcap, Keystone rode a strong outing by starting pitcher Michael Meszoros (Bridgeport, CT/Bassick) to earn the sweep.  The junior righty tossed six scoreless innings, scattering four hits and two walks while fanning nine batters.  Steve Aniska (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) closed out the game by pitching a perfect seventh inning including one strikeout to close out the shutout victory.

The Giants scored a single run of each of the last four innings to give the pitching staff the offensive support they would need.  Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) drove in Bzozowski with a single in the fourth to open the scoring before Keystone doubled their lead in the fifth when Joe Angelucci (Commack, NY/Commack) scored on an RBI groundout by McLaughlin.

In the visitors' sixth, Andre Castro (Kingston, NY/Kingston) came home with the Giants' third run following an error on a ball hit by Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) and, in the seventh, Riscica came home on a McLaughlin sacrifice fly to close out the scoring.

Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) recorded two of the Giants' seven hits in the nightcap while McLaughlin knocked in a pair of runs to lead Keystone's offense.

The Giants will be back right back in action on tomorrow when they take on the College of St. Scholastica in a doubleheader.  First pitch of Sunday's opener between the Giants and the defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference champion Saints is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Fort Pierce.
