Superior, Oberlin split doubleheader

After a day off the Yellowjacket baseball team returned to the diamond on Saturday, taking on Oberlin College of Ohio for a doubleheader, with each team coming away with one win on the day.

Oberlin 10, Yellowjackets 8

A tight game to open the twinbill, Oberlin scored a pair of runs in the top half of the seventh inning to break an 8-8 tie and earn the victory.

Oberlin opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Yellowjacket starter Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) got in trouble early. After getting the first out, McDermid walked a hitter and hit another with a pitch before getting the second out. A two-out single put the Yeomen up 1-0. The Yellowjackets tied the game in the bottom of the third when Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) was walked with the bases loaded.

The Yeomen got the run back in the top of the fourth to move ahead 2-1 before the Yellowjackets had a big inning to regain the lead.

In the bottom of the fourth red-hot senior Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) led off with a triple. Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) was then hit by and went to second on a passed ball to put two runners in scoring position. A fielder's choice erased thelead runner, but a walk to Tyler Evans (Andover, Minn./Andover) loaded the bases. Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) then cleared the bases with a triple to put the Yellowjackets up 4-2. Back-to-back walks again loaded the bases, and after the Yeomen got the second out of the inning Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) singled up the middle to score two and stretch the lead to 6-2.

But as quickly as the Yellowjackets built the lead, it evaporated, as Oberlin answered with a big inning of its own, scoring six times in the top of the fifth to jump back in front.

The Yellowjackets again tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Remund started the rally with a two-out double and went to third on a wild pitch. After Flaherty walked, Fairbanks came to the plate and brought both runners home, knocking his second triple of the day to the gap in right center field and the score was 8-8.

Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan), who came on in the sixth inning to snuff out an Oberlin threat was on the hill in the seventh when the Yeoman took the lead. After getting the lead-off man, Wiblin struck out the second hitter, only to have him reach on a throwing error. After a walk the Yeoman had a double and a sacrifice fly to plate two runs and lead 10-8.

Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) got on base with a walk to lead off the inning, but three straight Yellowjackets struck out to end the game, handing the Yellowjackets their second loss of the season.

Wiblin took the loss for the Yellowjackets, dropping to 1-1 on the year after allowing two unearned runs on one hit in 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out one.

McDermid was making his first start of the season in the game, and pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits.

The Yellowjackets were out-hit 15-6 in the game. Fairbanks was the only Yellowjackets with a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Yellowjackets 8, Oberlin 0

The Yellowjackets were able to push the tough ending of the first game out of their minds and opened up the second game with a big first inning, as they cruised to an 8-0 win.

And again the Yellowjackets did the damage with two outs.

After Connor McLeod (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes) and Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) were retired to start the game, Remund tripled to left center field and Flaherty walked to put runners on the corners. Remund came home on a single from Fairbanks to open the scoring. An error loaded the bases and Quinones drew a walk to bring home to score Flaherty. With the bases still loaded, Evans ripped a triple down the left field line, scoring all three runs and the game was blown open, with the Yellowjackets in front 5-0 before the Yeomen came to the plate.

Flaherty and Fairbanks led off the third with back-to-back singles before Holden hit into a fielder's choice to score Flaherty. In the fourth Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) led off with a double and went to third on a ground out. Soderquist knocked him in with a one-out single to push the lead to 7-0.

Then in the top of the seventh Quinones closed out the scoring with an RBI single that brought home Fairbanks, who started the inning with a walk, making the final 8-0.

The recipient of all the offense was Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner). The junior lefty went the distance, scattering seven hits in seven innings with no walks and three strikeouts to move to 2-0 on the year.

At the plate Remund and Fairbanks each had two hits in the game to lead the Yellowjackets, who had nine hits in the game.

The Yellowjackets (8-2) will close out their Arizona trip on Sunday when they play California Lutheran in one, nine-inning game.
