Game 1: New Paltz 1, Fredonia 0

New Paltz was able to squeak by in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring only one run on four hits.

The sole run was scored in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore center fielder Tom Dieckhoff (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) was able to steal third and then advance to home on a throwing error by Fredonia's catcher.

Senior pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) threw for 6 1/3 innings and earned his third win of the season, moving his overall record to 3-2. Pyz allowed no runs off three hits, and he had six strikeouts on the day. Relieving Pyz, in the top of the seventh inning with one out, was junior Shaun Hansen (Southold, N.Y./Greenport), who struck out the only batter he faced and received his first career save.

Senior pitcher Steve Sturm shouldered the loss for Fredonia, allowing one unearned run off four hits and two hit by pitches while striking out one.

Sophomore first baseman Chris Baltera (Commack, N.Y./Commack) was able to hit 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, collecting half of the Hawks' total hits in the first game. Senior shortstop Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and junior third baseman Mike Sparacino (Commack, N.Y./Commack) also added hits, with both batting 1-for-3 in the first game.

For Fredonia, junior catcher Anthony Schiro went 2-for-3 with a double.

Game 2: New Paltz 6, Fredonia 4

New Paltz, which had not led all game, relied on a four-run surge in the bottom of the eighth to claim a 6-4 advantage heading into the ninth. Sophomore pitcher Christian Huertas (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) entered the game in the top of the ninth with two outs and runners on first and second, and after Fredonia loaded the bases with a single, Huertas induced a fly out to right field to give the Hawks the victory.

Baltera started the late-game comeback with a double to right center field. Junior designated hitter Stanley DeLaCruz (Bronx, N.Y./High School of International Business and Finance) then continued the Hawks' hitting success with an infield single to the shortstop. Sophomore catcher Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) was able to drive in freshman Brett Wisner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills), who pitch ran for Baltera, on a single to left field. Now with runners on first and third, senior pinch hitter David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, ultimately for Dieckhoff, who drove in DeLaCruz on a single to right field. Morse then added to the Hawks' four-run inning with a double through the left side, knocking in two runs.

Fredonia took control of the game early, scoring runs in the first two innings. Junior first baseman Ricky Mendiola drove in junior right fielder Kenny Johnston off a single through the right side to open scoring in the first, while junior left fielder Scott Schuster plated Schiro in the second to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.

Morse cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, driving in DiNardo with an infield single. Dieckhoff proved valuable on the base paths yet again, as he came home on a wild pitch in the fifth to tie the game at 2-all. Fredonia, however, swelled the advantage to 4-2 in the sixth, with freshman catcher Mike Prentice launching a solo home run to left field before Schuster executed a squeeze play to perfection later on in the inning, plating senior center fielder Bobby Frantz with a sacrifice bunt.

Sophomore pitcher Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) started on the mound for the Hawks, throwing 4 2/3 innings while allowing two runs off four hits. The Hawks had to make use of their bullpen, bringing in freshman Luke Schuessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), junior Roy Missall (Hemlock, N.Y./Honeoye Central) and freshman Chris Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point). Ultimately, Jesse Vahamonde (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) was the pitcher of record for the Hawks, coming in to pitch the eighth inning. Vahamonde earned his first career win as a collegiate pitcher, striking out one and forcing two fly outs. Following Vahamonde, were Hansen and Huertas, who combined efforts in the ninth. Huertas came in with two outs in the top of the ninth and was credited with the save, which was his second of the season.

Junior pitcher Thomas Morris lasted five innings for Fredonia but did not earn a decision, yielding two runs (one earned) off three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch while striking out two. Senior Joey Tingue tossed two innings of relief and also did not receive a decision, permitting just one hit and one hit by pitch while striking out one. Senior pitcher Kyle Grey was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs off five hits and a hit by pitch in the eighth inning.

Morse led New Paltz's offense, batting 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. DeLaCruz and DiNardo, each went 2-for-4, and DiNardo added two RBI and two runs scored.

Fredonia's attack combined for 12 hits, with Mendiola and Frantz each going 3-for-5.
