Thomas More Drops Two Games at Washington & Jefferson

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The Thomas More College baseball team dropped both games a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Washington & Jefferson College today (Friday, April 18, 2014) at Ross Memorial Park. W&J won game one, 5-4, and the nightcap, 15-2.

With the sweep, the Presidents improve to 16-11 overall and 11-2 in the PAC ad the Saints fall to 15-12 overall and 9-5 in the PAC.

In the first game of the day, the Saints scored one in the first and two in the fourth to build a 3-0 lead, but W&J scored two in the fifth an one in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. In the seventh, the Saints plated one in the top half and the Presidents scored two in the bottom of the inning for the 5-4 win.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a no-decision as he pitched five and two-third innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on nine hits, while striking out one and walking one. Senior pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) suffered the loss as he pitched one inning of relief and gave up two runs (both unearned) on two hits.

Senior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) led the team at the plate as he was two-for-three with a home run, two runs batted-in and a run scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as freshman center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a run score, junior first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) was two-for-four with a RBI and senior right fielder Cody Makin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a double and a run scored.

In the nightcap, W&J scored three in the first, two in the second, nine in the third and one in the sixth, while holding Thomas More to a run in the second and a run in the fifth for the 15-2 win.

Two Saints had multiple hits in the game as Miller was two-for-three with a double and a run scored and junior left fielder Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with a run scored.

Sophomore pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) suffered the loss as he pitched two and a third innings and gave up 14 runs (13 earned) on 12 hits, while striking out two and walking one. Freshman pitcher Jake Seaman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pitched two and two-third innings of relief and didn't allow a run, while giving up two hits and striking out two. Freshman pitcher Michael Luebbe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched one inning and gave up one ru (earned) on two hits and struck out two.

Thomas More and Washington & Jefferson will close out the three-game PAC series tomorrow (Saturday, April 19) with a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Ross Memorial Park.
