La Plume, PA – Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) went 6-7 with four RBIs while scoring seven runs on the day to lift Keystone College to doubleheader sweep of Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball action at Christy Mathewson Field. The senior outfielder tied a school record for runs in a doubleheader while his six hits tied for second most in a twin bill in program history as the Giants pushed their winning streak to nine games with a 12-4 win in Monday's opener before the hosts rallied for a 15-9 win in the nightcap.
Keystone, who has now won 16 of its last 18 games, improves to 19-11 on the season and 12-2 in conference play while the Highlanders fall to 8-27 this spring and 1-16 in the CSAC.
Cairn jumped out to a 3-0 in the first at-bats of Monday's opener by taking advantage of three hits and one run in the inning. Jacob Allen scored the Highlanders' first run of the game when Caleb Lang doubled down the left field line before Kenneth Searle singled home Joey Nieves-Markee. Eric Hodges drove in the visitors' third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.
Keystone got a pair of runs back in the home half of the inning to make it a 3-2 game. The Giants executed a double steal to plate their first run of the game with Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) swiping second and Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) taking home. Catherina later came around to score the host's second run on a passed ball.
The Giants took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second inning with Rojas scoring from third as Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) reached on an error before Darley came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Reyes.
Rojas hit a two-run single in the third inning that brought home Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) and Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) as Keystone pushed their lead to three runs. Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) scored the Giants' seventh run of the game on a throwing error by the Highlanders as Rojas stole second before Reyes hit a two-run single to left that brought home Rojas and Joe Angelucci (Commack, NY/Commack) as Keystone extended their lead to 9-3.
The Giants added three runs in the fourth inning with Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scoring when Luciano reached on a fielding error with nobody out and the bases loaded before Darley delivered a two-run base knock to left field to stretch the score line to 12-3.
Cairn got a run back in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Lang, but Keystone starting pitcher James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) would strand a pair of runners to escape without any further damage.
Dunning improved to 3-0 on the spring, picking up the win after going five innings on the mound and yielding four runs on seven hits while fanning four batters on the day. Jake Granteed (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) gave up one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless sixth inning while Elvin Jorge (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) retired the side in order in the seventh inning to close out the win.
Reyes, Riscica, Guerrero, Rojas, and Darley all went 2-3 with Darley driving in three runs and Reyes and Rojas adding two RBIs apiece to lead Keystone's offense in the opener.
Cairn starter Josh Freed (1-3) was charged with the loss in game after allowing 12 runs on 10 hits while striking out one batter in four innings of work. Caleb Seibert gave up two hits and fanned one batter while holding the Giants scoreless in their final two innings at the plate.
Allen and Lang had two hits apiece to lead the Highlanders with Lang collected two RBIs in the game one loss.
In game two, Cairn once again jumped out to an early lead, this time putting up two runs in the top of the first inning with Allen scoring on a base hit to left by Searle before Nieves-Markee crossed the plate when Hodges grounded into a double play. Keystone cut their deficit in half in the home half of the inning when Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) scored from second on a single to right by Riscica. The Giants leveled the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Darley lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home Rojas with the tying run.
The Highlanders went back in front in the top of the third inning when Trent Fiori hit a single to right with the bases loaded to bring home Nieves-Markee with the go-ahead run before Jon Sanville singled to right and the Highlanders cleared the bases with a fielding error by the Giants. Cairn extended their lead to 7-2 when Sanville scored on an RBI groundout by Allen.
The Giants cut their deficit to 7-3 in the home half of the inning Riscica scored as McLaughlin grounded into a double play, but the Highlanders scored two runs on four hits in the following frame to stretch their advantage to six runs with Hodges and Freed collected RBI singles in the inning.
Keystone responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs on eight hits, rallying to take an 11-9 lead. Darley plated Rojas with a sacrifice fly before Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) and Guerrero delivered RBIs singles. McLaughlin followed with a two-run double before Reyes tied the game with an RBI base hit to right. Rojas then gave the Giants their first lead of the game with a two-run home run over the fence in left-center.
The hosts extended their lead to 13-9 with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth as Corl scored when Gurman reached on a fielding error by the Highlanders before McLaughlin drove in Gurman with a single back up the middle. Rojas scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning before Corl drove in Angelucci with a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring as Keystone recorded runs in all six innings in which they came to the plate.
Keystone starter Austin Barefoot (Alexandria, PA/Tyrone Area) was charged with seven runs - four of which were earned – on seven hits to two walks while striking out three batters in 2.1 innings of work. Junior Lazaro (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) yielded two runs on four hits in 0.2 of work before turning the ball over to Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) (3-1), who pitched two scoreless innings in which he gave up a pair of hits. Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) struck out three while allowing just a walk in two scoreless innings to close out the victory.
Rojas went 4-4 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run while driving in two runs and scoring four runs to lead Keystone's offense in the nightcap. McLaughlin added two hits and three RBIs while Corl had a pair of hits and scored three runs.
Cairn starter Tyson Rohrs (3-4) surrendered 10 runs on 10 hits while fanning three batters in 3.2 innings on the hill. Seibert came on in relief again in game two and pitched the final 2.1 innings, surrendering five runs on four hits.
Lang and Searle had three hits apiece to lead the visitor's offense in game two.
The Giants and Highlanders will wrap up their regular season series on Tuesday with a single, nine-inning game at Cairn. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Langhorne.
