NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Combining for eight extra base hits, four of which were round trippers, Manchester University and Indiana Tech lit up the scoreboard at Gratz Field Tuesday, April 29.

Both starting pitchers kept the opposing offenses off-balance early. MU freshman Cory Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) limited the Warriors to a run on three hits while walking just one in two innings of work, while ITC starter Aaron Carroll wasn't touched for a run until the third.

Once the runs started, the floodgates opened. MU (23-13) battled back from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits, leading as late as the fourth frame (6-5). However, Indiana Tech's offense, aided by seven walks and seven hit batsmen, broke open the intrastate clash with a pair of five-run frames in the fifth and sixth en route to a 14-8 win. The game concluded after six due to inclement weather.

Junior second baseman Logan Hug (Indianapolis, Ind.) guided the Spartans with three hits, three runs scored, three RBIs and a home run. Sophomore third baseman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.,) also blasted a homer, while freshman first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) added two RBIs. Indiana Tech (29-19-1) was led by leadoff hitter Justin Kalusa's four hits and five RBIs and a six-RBI afternoon from third baseman Romer Portes.

Manchester University, holding a two-game lead on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, closes the 2014 regular season hosting Transylvania University Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3. Game times are 4:30 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday.

NOTES: Hug stretched his hit streak to nine games, while senior designated player Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) moved his on-base string to 15 straight … Hug's hit streak has seen his batting average sky-rocket. It's up 126 points (.233 - .359) in the span due in large part to seven multiple-hit efforts.
