Tommie sophomore Cory Quinlan's fifth-inning grand slam -- his first collegiate home run -- led No. 8-ranked St. Thomas (31-7) to Friday's 7-3 win over St. John's in first-round play at the MIAC Baseball Playoffs in Minnetonka.
UST junior Colin Wendinger improved to 7-0 on the season as allowed three runs and five hits in a complete-game mound effort. Wendinger blanked St. John's from the second through seventh innings.
The Tommies left the bases loaded three times and had two runners tagged out at home but managed to beat the Johnnies (21-9) for the third time in nine days.
Quinlan, Tyler Peterson, Ben Podobinski and Jack Hogan each had two hits to lead an 11-hit St. Thomas attack.
St. Thomas plays a winners' bracket game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
