Austin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team fought back from an early deficit, but could not overcome a late unearned run in a 3-2 loss to Sul Ross State in an elimination game at the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Austin. The loss knocks the Cru out of the ASC Tournament and ends UMHB's season with a 26-17 overall record. The Lobos improve to 21-22 on the year with the victory.

Sul Ross jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Johnny Campos led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. The Cru had a chance to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but Dakota Parsons was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Zack Whiddon's double. Campos scored on Connor Griffith's double in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the Lobos lead to 2-0. UMHB fought back to tie the game on RBI singles from Heath Spencer and Will Stafford in the top of the seventh, but left runners on first and third in that inning. Sul Ross took a 3-2 lead with an unearned run on Josh Vasquez's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but Aaron Barteau struck out the last two batters of the inning to strand runners on second and third base. The Cru would put on a runner on base on Spencer's two-out walk in the top of the ninth, but the game ended on a fielder's choice.

Jordan Mattke took the loss for UMHB to finish the season at 2-4. Mattke scattered seven hits over seven and a third innings. He struck out six, walked two and allowed just two earned runs. Derrick Bernard pitched two and a third innings of hitless relief to earn the win for the Lobos and even his record at 1-1. Whiddon had two of the Cru's six hits in the game.
